Erm, should I start toilet-training ds?

Ds is 2.1. Tonight he had a big meltdown in the bath, then when sitting on dh's lap, suddenly announced he was going to poo. I said he could (well he was wrapped in a towel!), he said, "toilet". So I carried him in, sat him on the seat, held him up, and much to our astonishment, he did it! Then stood up to look, laughed with pride, then did a little wee, even shaking his penis like daddy does! [ridiculously PFB proud mummy emoticon]

He's asked to wee in the toilet a few times before but always become distracted by the novelty and not actually managed any.

Do I need to be more pro-active about this now, or is he still v young and just experimenting?

yes go for it, ds1 was 20 months when he took the lead and was in pants, good luck

katedan · 14/05/2009 14:12

Hvae a go, it does seem quite young for a boy but I know boys who have fully potty trained at 2 and he sounds keen so go for it.

screamingabdab · 14/05/2009 15:02

Sorry to sound the voice of doom, but I wouldn't get too excited. 2 is early for a boy to physically be able to identify the need to use the toilet, hold it, and do the deed.

I would keep him in nappies but respond any time he wants to go on the loo, as you have done.

A good friend tried it at 2 as her DS was keen, but the potty training stalled a few weeks later - loads of accidents - got better- got worse again - mum very frustrated.

Bottom line (pardon the pun) is that he wasn't fully clean and dry until shortly before school.

Galava · 14/05/2009 15:04

My DS took to it well before he was 2.

He's never dirtied himself, but does have the odd little wet accident every now and then.

I'd go for it.

leothelioness · 14/05/2009 15:15

I have 2 ds's and both were clean and dry within 1 month of being 2. With ds1 it was active on my part as I was pregnant with ds2 and didnot want 2 sets of nappies. par the occasional accident he was pretty much dry after a week. I didnot use pullups just underware but did make sure I carried a porry with me when out and about after the first week when mostly stayed at home and I made sure I asked him if he needed to go fairly frequently.
DS2 started to say he needed a poo a few months before he was 2 and was dry just after 2 so it is possible!

Its worth a try- if you have a few days to spend at home, let him go bare bummed have a potty at hand and see what happens.
My DS trained himself like that at 2.1 , it was another couple of months before we got him into pants tho, as they confused him, so he went commando in shorts.
They don't get much warning to start with, but if you can cart a potty about with you... it saves on the nappy washing/ buying.

FrankMustard · 14/05/2009 21:26

Go for it. My boys were ready at 2 and never looked back.

phdlife · 15/05/2009 12:07

hmmm I have any number of days to spend at home

but not sure I can face the accidents with un-put-downable 1m dd in hand as well.

also wondered if it might be a bit much for his wee head, alongside dd's arrival and a hefty dose of toddler-dom? seeing as he sobbed for a quarter hour today over which color cup for his milk, I mean.

Go for it - you will soon know if it is a one off.

DD has finally managed it!

Here's my thread about it. Shoshe is the God of Potties and Toilets!

DS was about 2.2 and tbh it could have been sooner - it was just me who chickened out

phdlife I think that it is important for you to be ready to devote your time to it.

I have to admit where I'm coming from, here. Both my boys were over 3 when they were potty trained.

DS2 initiated it himself, and even though we both had tonsillitis at the time I knew we had a good chance of cracking it quickly because he was so old !. he was completely clean and dry in 2 weeks (nighttime too). very few accidents outside, and with better bladder control that me !

DS1 was showing no signs of being remotely interested at 3, and I was very wary of pushing it because I knew myself that I was the sort of person who could get a bit het up about it (and also had a young baby). I had already withstood my mum's disapproval of the fact that he was over 3 and still in nappies.

Finally we took the bull by the horns and he had a Big Boy day with his dad, where he went into pants. He also took 2 weeks, a few poo accidents.

I am glad I waited and did not push it. I know it's hard when they initiate it though, but that's where you being ready is important, because I do think maybe you are going to encounter more accidents.

screamingabdab · 15/05/2009 12:26

Of course everyone is different, as the other posts have shown

mumof2222222222222222boys · 15/05/2009 12:28

DS1 was 2.9, and we were pretty much ok within a couple of weeks.

DS2 was 2.3 when he showed signs of being ready. 2 months later he is fine on the wees, but has only done 1 poo in the potty - so we are having one poo accident a day. Not much fun. Clearly with most younger children it takes a bit longer - but not to say you shouldn't give it a go. You can always revert to nappies!

Good luck

LilRedWG · 15/05/2009 12:31

PHD - I am much better now that I'm not changing nappies all day. Life's not too bad thanks.

I hope you are enjoying your little ones.

screamingabdab · 15/05/2009 12:32

mumof222etc That's where my friend - see above - struggled. Many poo accidents.

You have my sympathy. It's an "interesting" time

phdlife · 15/05/2009 12:37

abdab I think you're right. Couldn't bear it just now - cleaning up what feels like 400 nappies a day is bad enough atm, along with everything else.

Red - let's just say you shouldn't be too surprised if GCSE arrives in the post for you sometime next week
