I am worried about my son?

jk is 5 years old and was deaf up until he was four, when he started to talk he had a terrible stutter and could not get his words out. He now speaks okay apart from the odd sounds and words. He gets very frustrated when i cannot understand what he says to me. Other children have called him stupid and because he is quite a big boy they call him fatso, because of his size people mistake him for being older. I am concerned that his education has got behind and I am not sure the best ways to help him?.

let him know you love him.
do you have a supportive family? or friends? try to get them to spend quality time with him as well. sounds to me as he needs confidence in himself before his education level will improve, and if kids bully him like this, then it will be harder.

Have you tried the british satmmering assocaition? they may be able to help you work together to undersatnd him better. perhapsyou could ahve a word with his teacher and see if they can deal with the name calling without mantioning him by name. A gernal chat on how it isnasty to call people by names that sort of thing.
Hope it all works out for you and your son.
Take care

Has he had an implant ??

overload · 04/05/2005 21:47

thanks for all your answers I have spoken to his teacher and hopefully this will solve the problem. The hearing specialist said jk had glue ear and has cleared itself, hopefully they are right. I try and give him has much encouragement as I can. Thanks again I fell I am not alone and its nice to get other peoples advise.

Good to hear, the reason I asked re the implant was that you said he was deaf until 4 which suggested an implant to me.

If you had said yes, I was going to suggest all sorts of allied things................

There is a post somewhere re my Ds who has not had an implant but had a terrible stutter, if I can find it I will post it.

Speak to your HV or GP and see if there are any groups in your area for children who are deaf - maybe if he meets other boys and girls with the same problem, he will become more confident in himslef and learn that he's not alone. It might help. Good luck and take care

thanks lgj, if you could sent any information on stuttering i would be most gratefull. I have got a few print outs off the net. I make sure i always look eye to eye and keep instructions very simple so JK can answer with simple feedback. I am in constant contact with hv and school to make sure he is happy. Sometimes because he is a little behind the naughty boys seems to take advantage - any suggestions?
