What age did your child have adenoids out?

DD desperately needs her adenoids removed. ENT chap has said to wait until she's 4, otherwise there's a risk of bleeding. BUT apart from the fact that one nostril runs non-stop, she has moderate hearing loss in one ear (despite having grommets) and is about to see a speech and lang therapist for fortnightly sessions as she can't pronounce any sounds that come from the front of the mouth (b, d, f, j etc) as she can't close her mouth because then she can't breathe. These are both due to the adenoids. Have just heard Gt Ormond Street is operating on under 4s as have new procedure which lessens risk of bleeding. SO, what age did yours have adenoids removed? What does 'risk of bleeding' (other than the obvious)? Should I risk the risk? She's 2 1/2 at mo. Thanks.

I approached GP when DS was 3. He finally had operation when he was 6 and half. Lots of his pronunciations were awful by then, he had terrible hearing, people thought he was ignoring them, being cheeky etc.
£ and half years to jump through all the various loops/tests etc
I'm in Ireland btw.

Sorry, don't really know the answer to your questions.

Did he catch up with his speech? Thankfully I took out Bupa insurance for DS shortly before we realised there was a problem and they have paid up for everything, including S&LT sessions. Op is all set for when she is 4, but just think she would benefit in so many ways by having it done sooner, but obv don't want to put her health at risk in any way.

His speech seems ok now (its now about 9mths later). His hearing was instantly improved from day 1.

have just re-read your post and I am so eejitty tonight (sick child, not much sleep!)
Ds had grommets, apparently he did not need adenoids done(I'm not convinced).
Sorry my post is mostly irrelevant

That's OK, hope sick child gets well soon and you get more sleep tonight!

I had my adenoids out at 12. It didn't help my pronunciation as it was too late to 'learn' new ways to sound words.

helpYOUiWILL · 03/05/2009 19:08

rubbish. we operate on children at the age of 3yrs.

Mishee · 03/05/2009 19:32

Who operates on 3 year olds, helpyouiwill? wotulookinat, one of the reasons I'm keen to have them done sooner is because she is i n bad habis with some words already, like I have been practising the b sound, so I say 'b,b,b,b,b,b, bye bye' and she says 'b,b,b,b,b,b,gye gye' so that is definitely down to habit as she can say the b sound when focusing on it. Must try not to do too much of this practising as are having our first lot of slt sessions with homework next week.

I had mine out at 5.

Curious re the bleeding, all the kids on my ward had blood coming out of ears. I thought it was just excepted, didn't hurt at all.

helpYOUiWILL · 04/05/2009 20:45

adenoids are taking out via the nose and are done as a day case. Bleeding from ears?? probably gromets - but they dont normally bleed that much

whooosh · 04/05/2009 20:52

DD had tonsils and adenoids out at 2.5yrs. Best thing for her-more for the tonsils aspect.Surgeon told us they don't like perating on under 4's other than extrem circumstances-one look at DD and she set a date.
I would keep pushing if you really feel your DD would benefit.

Mishee · 04/05/2009 21:27

Because it's private, I do get the feeling that if I request it they'll do it sooner (have to say that we pay the insurance for her but not us - makes me feel less guilty!) but I don't want to put her at risk of 'bleeding' whatever that means.
