do you mean weaning onto food?
do you know the current advice is to wait untilyour baby is 6 months old, ie 26 weeks?

The current guidelines are six months (26 weeks). I think DD was about 24 weeks when I first gave her a piece of steamed carrot to gnaw on, if we'd been doing purees rather than BLW I'd definitely have waited the extra two weeks.

Is there a reason why you think she needs to be weaned early?

Littlepurpleprincess · 03/05/2009 13:44

yes, wait until 6 months. DEFINATLY 100% NOT before 17 weeks!!!! It can cause serious health problems. Why the rush? Milk is easy and gives her everything she needs.

When you do start. Give baby rice for the first week, then move on to puree fruit and veg.

Some people really like baby lead weaning but I don't really know much about it...google it.

But it's really important that you don't give her gluten or dairy until she is 6 months, her little tummy can't digest it yet.

26wks as per the Guidlines.

Broccoli was the first thing DS had and he loved it then and he still loves it now.

ThingOne · 03/05/2009 13:46

DS1 27 weeks, a banana
DS2 24/25 weeks, broccoli trees

It can be damaging to a baby's gut to introduce foods other than milk too early. The NHS advice is to wait until around six months. IIRC they say no solids before 20 weeks unless advised by a paediatrician.

Littlepurpleprincess makes some really good points, weaning before 17 weeks and gluten, dairy, wheat, eggs, fish, shellfish before six months are actively dangerous. Once your DD is six months she can have everything (apart from honey, nut and things with a strong history of allergies within your family) that makes weaning so much easier.

However, there is absolutely no reason why you have to give baby rice at all. Regardless of if you go for purees or BLW (or purees and a bit of finger food) it's fine just to start with vegetables. Baby rice tastes absolutely revolting.
