Teacher has flagged up speech issues with DS - any advice.....

DS1 is 5 and 6 months. Teacher asked me to stop back today, and said that they had noticed that DS1 had trouble pronouncing "CAH, CAH" sound (as in computer, he says puter).

She gave me the sign for it, and said that if we wanted, she would/could recommend us to a speech therapist.

We have noticed him having trouble with some pronunciation (can't say Goggles, or Vanilla) but I would say that 98% of the time he is understood.

So, do we go ahead with ST, what does it involve, and how can we help him at home??

TIA

I would go for a SALT referral simply because it can take a long time for an appointment to come through.

ie an NHS SALT referral.

Does he say cat? car? He may just call the computer puter out of habit. Can he say dog, good, give, get?

McDreamy · 30/04/2009 20:08

I would at least get him assessed by a SALT. I am expecting a referral when DS starts school. There are quite a number of sounds he has problems with. Do you have reservations about the referral?

you could help him by clapping out the sylubulls (sp) in words ie, com-put-er, van-ill-a so he understands there are 3 sounds to say. do you have any worries about his hearing?

have his hearing checked - you might think it fine - but its not simply a case of standing behing him ans whispering - hearing is on many levels and each sound of a word is sounded at a different pitch and he might not be able to hear them properly

Go ahead with the referral - you cant lose out by doing so and the therapist will be able to let you know what you can do at home to help them. My DS1 is just 3 and cant pronounce certain letters right (including j sounds - pesky as his name starts with a j) - I spoke to a speech therapist at our local childrens centre and she said that they wouldnt do anything about it until the child was older than 5 but the best thing to do was to just repeat the word back to them correctly (like "yes, the computer is on") but not make a big deal of it as that's counterproductive.

thank you everyone - some great, solid advice! regarding his hearing, I don't think he has hearing issues, (although being a typical boy, he doesn't always respond). He does have trouble pronoucning Dog (sounds like Gog)but he can say Give, Good etc.

I have no problem at all with getting him referred.

I would get him checked out by the SALT if there is a problem then they should be able to help. I would also point out you may be used to how your child speeks so would not necessarlay question it.

my ds has had speech therapy since he was 5, he now nearly 6. he has similar probs with his pronounciation. go ahead with the referral, it can take a while on the waiting list. therapy is good, and they make it fun, my ds loves it. dont expect overnight miracles though, its taking a while for us. i was worried he would stand out at school or get teased, but that has not happened at all, the only impact has been all the little girls mothering him and helping him, which he loves!!

Does he mix up cuh & tuh sounds? My nearly 5yo ds says tow/tat for cow/cat. If OP's ds only has problems with t/c, he's quite borderline for needing SALT, ime, but no harm in getting him assessed, I guess.
