Missing Milk Tooth

Ds is now 21 months and has nearly all his teeth, but one of his top insisors (?spelling) is missing. There is a little gap between his front insisor and his canine tooth but not big enough for another tooth to fit into. Anyone had any similar experience?

bluebear, I only have 2 of those front top teeth where you should have 4, it is hereditary, my mum had 2, her sister had 3 and her dad only had 2. I also don't have any wisdom teeth either. Not everyone is necessarily born with the 'correct number', hasn't caused me any problems, I had to have a brace when I was younger to close the gap, they turned my canine teeth around so that they look like front teeth and noone notices unless I tell them.

Bluebear

My DS has the upper left lateral incisor missing, unfortunately the liklihood of the permanent one missing is higher when the milk tooth is missing. He also has very pointed canines and looks fangy in a darling way!!

Both DH and I have perfect teeth, not showing off, but I don't know where he's got it from as it can be very hereditary.

bluebear, I had all my baby teeth but never got 2 permanent ones so not the same but maybe...
Anyway my advice is to get a really good orthodontist to check it out when ds is older. I got crap advice and really wish I'd had the baby teeth removed, braces put in and the space closed but now it's too late and I still have 2 baby teeth but really crap falling apart ones.

I still have one baby tooth that I am very fond of (bottom left premolar) and which has stood up to the test of time very well! No cavities or anything. Just wanted to post this in defence of valiant little baby teeth struggling against the odds, unlike Morocco's "crap" ones!!!

Thanks for your messages everyone. Dh and I have the normal number of teeth, but strangely one of my adult incisors didn't come through until a few years after the rest, so I had a milk tooth there for some years, when the adult tooth came through it had to twist to fit the gap so maybe it's some sort of inherited thing.

I held onto 4 baby teeth, had to have three of them removed recently as they were of the crap variety like morocco. Nice to know I'm not alone

yeah, my ds of 20 m has nearly all his teeth now apart from the middle bottom 2. my dentist today said his milk teeth aren't there - when he's abit older they can xray to see if the second lot are there and if not we must talk to orthopeadic surgeons. I walked away feeling a little upset for ds as it means he will have a lisp/speech difficulties and wont even pronounce his name properly (has an 's' in it). Anyhow there's not much I can do now and on the scale of things he's/we're very luckey .I should try to find out ways to help him with his speech more- any suggestions would be greatly appreciated., My dentist said it is probably hereditary, tho neither families remember any previous missing teeth.

sels, without meaning to sound flippant, he can have my daughter's spare tooth! She has grown an extra one in behind her bottom teeth.

Last week the dentist said nothing will be done until she is around 9 or 10yo and then she will need to see an orthodontist. It will probably be taken out but they will want to see that her other teeth have come through properly before they start treatment.
