They don't really have any sense of self at that age..I saw an experiment that they did with babies/toddlers on TV once - they showed them their faces in the mirror, then took it away and painted a spot on their noses and showed them their faces again.

The younger ones touched the nose on the mirror as they didn't realise it was their nose that had the paint on it, whereas the older ones realise it was their nose and touched it - not the reflection - was pretty fascinating!

My 23 month old DD2 does this. When she is at the top of a slide she shouts "catch you" instead of "catch me"

IheartNY · 26/04/2009 20:25

mine did this as did several of my friends little ones, think its pretty standard

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 26/04/2009 20:25

Yup. It took a while for this to kick in. It's because people will call him 'him/you', you call yourself 'I/me' so it's really confusing. Try telling him that when 'Jack talks about Jack (or whatever his name is), Jack is me. When mum talks about mum, mum is me, when mum talks about jack, jack is you/he'. Just keep telling him this but in a way he understands.

jkklpu · 26/04/2009 20:26

very common and really sweet, I think; I remember being very faintly disappointed when ds1 started to get it "right"

bumbly · 26/04/2009 20:26

just think it is cute but had never heard of it!!

thanks!!

Oh yes, all the time. I think it is a normal confusion. In fact, at this age I think it shows good understanding of the 'person' to know 'you' at all, before you know it, he will not stop saying 'me'!

DD is just starting to get it right at 2.2, but she still says 'cuddle you' and 'help you' when she means 'me'. Just too cute.

bumbly · 27/04/2009 13:44

very cute

My ds used to say 'carry you' meaning carry me. Very sweet but now at 2.7 he hardly says it anymore. It's a hard thing to explain how to say correctly to them.

gigglinggoblin · 27/04/2009 13:49

Ds did this, was so funny. Took me way too long to figure out what he meant, poor thing was so frustrated with me - You do it, no mummy, YOU do it!

FrankMustard · 27/04/2009 13:50

Very common - and rather sweet! If I ask my 22mth old what his name is, he proudly pats his tum and says "me!" So when Dh or I talk about ourselves and refer to "me", he gets very confused as he thinks HE's "me" so how can anyone else be "me"!!

purepurple · 27/04/2009 13:52

very cute but like everyone else says very common
they can also get confused with he/she and I/my till 3 or 4.

bubblagirl · 27/04/2009 14:03

my ds is the same help you = help me
carry you= carry me

EBenes · 30/04/2009 14:40

DD is 2.5 and still does this. Always. Never gets it right. I've been worrying about it since she started talking, actually.

ilovetochat · 30/04/2009 16:07

dd does it with mine yours too, she says mine and i say yes it is yours she says no mine.

Daisymoosteiner · 30/04/2009 16:16

My dd used to do this.

We had a cat called Milo and once she twigged about the me/you thing she started calling him 'Your-lo' I'd say, no, it's MI-lo and she'd say, yes, 'Your-lo' I'd be nearly crying with frustration after a few rounds of that!
