DD (11months) started commando crawling quite early (about 5.5 months) and is still doing it now. I thought she'd move on to 'proper' crawling at some point but she hasn't. That doesn't bother me, I think her crawling is cute! However, seeing all of the other babies I know of her age pulling up, cruising and some taking steps unaided, I'm starting to wonder when she'll do this. She does try to pull up but can only do it on me when I'm sitting on the floor, and leans right over with her weight on her belly and arms rather than legs. I know, I know, I shouldn't be worrying, she's still young etc etc, but I do have a little nagging in the back of my mind wondering if there's a problem. I think because one of my friend's lo has clicky hips and has been in a brace for the best part of a year, I can't help but worry. Also, (and I know this sounds ridiculous so sorry!) but I'd really like her to be walking or at least cruising by my wedding in July! So..... tell me about your commando crawlers. How long did they do it for? When did they pull up? Walk? Tell me I'm ridiculous and need to get over myself if necessary!

I had a commando baby as well! She started commando crawling at about 9 months old, progressed to proper crawling about a month later and pulled herself up at about 11 months. She didnt take her first steps until a few days after her first birthday and was walking properly by 13 months or so. Im sure your DD will be up and about soon enough, she might never crawl 'properly' might just walk instead.
I always thought it was cute as well, and always wondered if it was because shes quite chubby and her little arms couldnt hold her up!

I can't remember when they progressed to proper crawling but all 3 of mine commando crawled. They all walked well within the normal time frame though. 12-14 months IIRC.

DS1 is 10 now and you really can't tell that he was a commando crawler/didn't walk til 14 months

DontlookatmeImshy · 24/04/2009 12:52

Both ds's commando crawled before crawling properly. Some babies never crawl properly and go straight to walking. Yours may be one of those. And July is 2-3 months away. Alot can happen in that time, she could be sprinting off up the aisle and you'll be wishing she was still commando crawling

Is she happy to put any weight on her legs at all?

Latchley · 25/04/2009 15:19

My DS was late with everything. For ages he used to move about by rolling everywhere. He then moved onto the commando, and never really bothered with crawling 'properly' at all. Although he used to pull himself up and hold on to furniture etc, he didn't walk until 16 months, but when he finally did it was like he learned overnight! We just missed out completely on the walking a couple of steps and falling down stage.

So, don't worry about her being behind, I have no doubt that she is just missing out on some of the interim stages!

Yes, she can put weight on her legs. Funnily enough, over this weekend she's been putting a lot more effort into pulling herself up, she must have heard me! She's strong in terms of holding her weight on her legs, but not pushing herself up, most of that is done by her arms, I guess this is how they start and her legs will get stronger the more she practices. She also seems to be getting very stroppy and frustrated, I think its because she knows what she wants to do but can't do it yet.

My Commando Crawler was inching himself across the lounge at 4 months!!! Pulled up at about 12, was crawling form about 10. But didn't walk till 15 months, which was driving me insane as I was ill with a new pregnancy (very ill - in hospital a lot) and could nto lift him!

He is now 7 and fastest runner in his class!

Don't worry!

feedthegoat · 26/04/2009 21:27

My ds did a commando crawl from about 5 to 5 and a half months and pushed himself up to crawl properly at about 7 and a half or 8 months.

He pretty much skipped the cruising stage altogether though he did pull himself up abit on the sofa. One day at 13 months he just stood up in the middle of the room and walked over to the television! He didn't walk again for another 2 days so I started to think I'd dreamt it! After that there was no stopping him.

DS1 was a commando crawler from about 7 months - me and DH were in the office one day and we had left him in the lounge...and he just appeared at the office door on his tummy with a huge grin on his face

He started crawling properly at about 11 months, was standing holding on to furniture at 9 months and was cruising at 10 months - but didn't walk until he was nearly 14 months so there was quite a delay between the cruising and walking.

He is now 2.9 and about as active as you can get

bruffin · 26/04/2009 21:48

Ds commando crawled at 8 months, never crawled properly and walked at 10 months. Before he commando crawled he was very adept at getting himself about by rolling round the room. He did cruise but I don't think he could pull himself up to standing, he had to be stood up IYSWIM

neversaydie · 26/04/2009 23:00

DS commando crawled at somewhere between 8 and 9 months at the same time as he was pulling himself up (and climbing onto the sofa.) He kept the two up together until just before his first birthday when he suddenly started walking. At this point he dropped the commando crawl. He also flatly refused to use his buggy so he learned to walk well pretty fast.

He did subsequently learn a 'proper' crawl, but only really used it in play.

He was and remains an extremely clumsy child, taking after his mother (we can both trip over fresh air on a bad day) but I am unconvinced that the failure to achieve a proper crawl had much to do with it either way.
