Anyone got a child older than 2 years 5 months with no words at all yet

My friend's DD is 2 years 7 months and is still not talking. She hadn't been worried because another friend of ours has a DS who didn't say his first word until he was 2 years 5 months. Now she wants some reassurance that there's nothing wrong with her DD and that there have been children who have started talking older than our friend's DS with no other problems.

She is down for SALT but the wait in our area is 12 months.

moondog We have both been referred to SALT but the waiting list is 12 months. Preschool gave me the number of somebody they knew yesterday who does it privately but what can I expect to pay for that? I really don't know if I can afford it.

So correct me if I am wrong, but if a child is pointing, babbling, making some names and noises ie communicating in their own way then speech development is probably delayed. Its not a disorder.

I only ask because I've been following this thread since last week. My DS is 2.4 and can only say mamma and dadda ( we say mummy and daddy) he makes a few animal noises and does a fair bit of signing.

He's been referred for SALT which I'm told will start when he is 2.6.

I havent been overly worried up till now, with 2 other kids you tend to chill a bit more, but then I read things and start to panic. His birth was quite traumatic as he was prem and I oftern think the worse.

I think I need to step back from the PC and take a bit more time to play with him.

Thanks for the discussion though, its very interesting.

moondog - I believe the advice was for children who had eye contact, were pointing, etc - i.e. otherwise communicating normally, just not talking.

DD had that one word she said well, so paediatrician said not to worry (for now). One of her friends had no words whatsoever and with further tests, it turned out that she had a hearing problem caused by an infection that went undetected.

Galava, a discussion over the internet is no substitute for seeing appropriate professionals.I really don't want anything thinking I'm trying to diagnose problems virtually. I'm just trying to shed some light on a subject that I know is of great concern to a lot of people (unsurprising as estimated 10% of kids have a comm. difficulty of some sort.)

My first son didn't speak until he was nearly 3 and only really clearly when he was nearly 4. At 2 he could only say mama and dada. He saw a speech therapist from about 2.5. I was really worried about but it came in its own time and I really think he was just a late talker. He had always had good understanding.

You are absolutely right Moondog. Sorry, wasn't intending on putting you on the virtual spot.

Funnily enough my HV phoned up this afternoon to ask how he was coming along and how she is going to nudge the Salt lady again. spooky

2babyblues How old was he when he said mama and dada?
