Would you move this child out of a cot and into a bed?

He's 2 next month.

Is a good sleeper but does tend to throw himself around in his sleep. He's never shown any urge to climb out of his cot. Over the last few weeks though he has wanted to go to sleep in every bed but his own - tonight he rostled down in our bed with his eyes shut while I was sorting out his PJs, last night it was the spare bed. So this has made me wonder whether he wants to be a big boy and sleep in a bed rather than a cot. He kicks off when I try to move him out of his chosen bed into his own room.

DP says if it ain't broke don't fix it - he's worried his sleep pattern will be disrupted and he'll start roaming the house at night.

Thoughts?

IMO, 2's a bit old for a cot. He's a big boy now. I'd go for a toddler bed rather then a single, they are alot lower and if he's a mover then this will be safe. I did this for my ds as he spends all night rolling around the bed. When he needed a bigger bed I brought him a cabin bed with high sides so he can't fall out. At least I don't find him on the floor any more!

It is a cotbed so he wouldn't be moving into a proper single.

There you go. Problem solved. I'd use it as a bed and see how it goes. If he's not ready you can always put the sides back on.

DS was a terrible sleeper, and still isn't a 7-7 but his sleep improved immeasureably when we put him from a cot into a bed. Like you I used to do the lifting sleeping child into cot, and it isn't easy! He is really proud of his "big boy bed" and loves to get into it.

Did yours' wander out of bed when you first moved them in?

Apologies pedants

Nope, because I closed his bedroom door. He could wander to the door and then hollar, that was all!

giddykipper · 20/04/2009 21:39

He can open doors. Think I might need a stairgate on the door to begin with.

Ds never got out of bed. He slept so much better when he was out of the cot. You can put a stair gate across his door if you are worried. I did this, I could still hear him but he couldn't escape.

Cot until they can climb over the top

Get out of their sleeping bag and climb over the top.

Get out of the inside-out sleeping bag and climb over the top.

Or you will get up one morning to find the fridge door open and LO fast asleep face down on the kitchen floor in a puddle of milk

giddykipper · 20/04/2009 21:45

What if he's stil not climbing out when he's 16?

Our door latches are at the top of the door, cottage style. DS will be trapped until he's at least 5 feet tall.

Giddykipper - then my evenings will be my own for a long time yet!

should read: inside-out sleeping bag/supersized cot. Doh!
