Would you take them to the docs?

My DS is 9 months old and he has had diarrhoea for the last week (I actually can't remember when he last had a solid poo - sorry if too much info!), however, it has got a lot worse in the last couple of days. I am trying to get him to drink as much water as possible but he isn't that keen. He has gone off his food completely so I have been trying to increase his formula in take to make sure he is getting enough liquid.

I am contemplating taking him to the docs tomorrow, however, I have spoken to the HV and NHS Direct and both have just said to leave it as there isn't much that can be done at this stage. I am just really worried that he is going to dehydrate as he doesn't seem to have very many wet nappies at the moment. His nappy is normally very heavy first thing in the morning, however, this morning it wasn't very wet at all.

Is there anything that can help or am I wasting my time going to the docs?

When did you last speak to the HV or NHS Direct. A lot can change in a baby in just a few hours.

If I were you (assuming he doesn't get worse in the night) I would ring the surgery and ask for an appt for tomorrow. If there is an option for a telephone consultation with a GP that knows you/him then perhaps ask to speak to them first on the phone.

Personally I'd take him to the GP just to be sure but if you want to leave it a bit longer I'd go to the pharmacy and see if they have something to help re-hydrate

I spoke to NHS Direct on Sunday night as he projectile vomited his entire bedtime bottle up and they suspected it might be gastro entiritis. They said that it might linger until the middle of this week. He hasn't been sick since and what is strange is that he doesn't seem to be bothered by the diarrhoea - no tummy pain and he is still all smiles which make me think that it isn't gastro. I haven't fed him anything new so I just don't know what is wrong. I think I will take him to the docs - better to be on the safe side - I just don't want them to think I am a paranoid first time mom!

No one will think you are a paranoid first time mum. Your little boy has had diarrhoea for a week. He is still off his food and has signs of dehydration You have tried taking the advice that has been given but the diarrhoea hasn't got better. Worth a little check up imo.

Hope he is soon better.

My 17mo ds2 had something similar a few weeks ago. The heartiest eater in the world learned to shake his head to refuse most food for days, he was sick every hour through one night, did the projectile vomit of his night-time bottle, all over his sleeping bag that had just come out of he tumble drier from being washed after the sicky night, and, although quite cheery most of the time, was just not himself.

Doc said he had something wrong with his throat as well so reckoned it wasn't a tummy bug, but a virus that had attacked his gastro- system, if there's an appreciable difference. his nappies weren't as grim as your lo's sound, but certainly no proper stools for the best part of a week. Then he just got better and returned to his usual voracious self.

Your ds is younger so agree with those who recommend you see a doc. Good luck.

Thanks all - will definitely make an appt first thing in the morning. He actually has a cold at the moment too (poor little sausage) so maybe it is some type of virus.

Will he drink dioralyte. A friend of mine had a similar problem and that is what they recommended. (her baby was about 1 i think need to check the packaging)

fledtoscotland · 14/04/2009 22:25

DS1 had a tummy bug similar to this last year. after 48hrs of diarrhoea NHS24 said that he should be seen by a GP. the GP refused to see him saying that it wasnt unusual for a tummy bug to last 4-5 days and as long as he was eating and drinking it would be ok.

My HV said to go back to the GP and eventually they said that it was viral but to dilute his milk (3 scoops to 6ozs milk) so he kept taking in fluids but didnt have the creaminess of the formula. My HV also suggested a "blonde" diet where you only feed white or "blonde" food - white bread, bananas, chicken, pasta, rice. keep the diet stodgy and bland.

HTH and hope hes better soon.

My doctor told me to give dd Dioralyte when she was potentially dehydrated at the same age. It's full of added minerals and sweeter to drink - she happily drank it from her bottle so at least i knew she was hydrated. (Very good for hangovers too, if you ever get one of them again!)

mom2ben · 15/04/2009 17:30

Thanks very much - am trying to get him to take the Diarolyte but he doesn't take much water but I will keep persevering. I took him to the doctor this morning and they've taken a stool sample to see if it's anything bacterial. I'll hear on Friday. She also said it could be Rotavirus which apparently there is nothing you can do about.
