I don't know whether to ignore it or what.

I tried talking to her but she's usually in a foul mood about something and thats why she's hit. When she's in a mood there's no talking to her. She knows it's bad and when she's calmed down she'll try and kiss it better where she hit and says sorry.

blimey, she's only 2! Just take the hand she hit you with gently but firmly and say firmly (not shouting) that hitting is not acceptable, that it hurts, and that if she's angry she's to hit a cushion - show her how. And give her a cuddle - she needs to know you love her whatever she does - some children hit/tantrum/pinch/whatever to test their parents' love for them and soon stop when they find that actually you do love them whatever.

If you do that every time she'll learn a much nicer way of being and will be choosing not to hit for the right reasons, not because she's scared of being punished/going on the naughty step.

Don't expect her to learn it straight away either - but just because she doesn't learn something right now, doesn't mean she won't learn it at all.

Thanks, she actually does hit other things when she gets angry and she can't reach me. She hit the bath the other day and really hurt her hand, obviously I gave her a big hug but I also told her hitting is bad and thats why it hurt, oops maybe that was the wrong thing to do.

Suggest she hits soft things like sofas or pillows. She's going to get angry whatever you do, but she needs to learn from an experienced adult more appropriate ways of letting that anger out. I don't think it was wrong to say hitting was bad! She needs to know it's not on to hit, but it is ok to feel angry - you don't want her to learn to bottle up her feelings.

I agree with greatwhiteshark-you may have to do it quite a lot before she gets the message, but be consistent.
