How much milk for a 1 year old?

OK so PFB turned 1 three weeks ago and I think I need to reduce her milk intake, is this right? TBH not sure how/where to do this. She currently has a bottle when she gets up and takes between 7-9ozs, then at about 3pm she has around 5 ozs and then 7ozs before bed.

Any advice welcome, thanks in advance

that sounds ok to me. ds1 is 18months and just has a bottle at night but drinks about 1 pink of cows milk during the day. I think i stopped his afternoon bottle about 14months cos he was eating three proper meals a day by then rather than just playing with food and he stopped his morning bottle himself a couple of weeks ago as he prefers a beaker now.

am sure someone will come along with proper factual stuff but i believe in going with the flow and at 1yr, they are still babies IMO

That sounds ok as it is if your dd wants it. My ds only has a cup of milk in the morning now and he's 20 months. By 10 months he was only on 1 7oz bottle a day.
A friend of mine was told by her health visitor to stop giving her 1 yo milk at bedtime and that he shouldn't be drinking from a bottle. He is now 7 and won't touch milk at all, so I'd stick with it for as long as she wants it tbh

My 14mo has a 7oz in the morning and 7oz in the evening. She dropped her day time milk at about 9mo, she was never to keen on it to begin with TBH.

My DS of 14 months has 8oz of cows milk in the morning and before bed. He also has some during the day, maybe another 5oz? I'm keen to let him have as much as he wants for as long as he wants, and this was also the HVs advice.

DD always drank lots of it, and she stil loves it even now.

My 14 month old DDs have a beaker of cow's milk each with breakfast - most of it gets spilled but they really love using them and prob get about 50-100ml each (not sure what this is in oz sorry)and then have a bottle each of 240ml before bedtime. They sometimes have daytime bottles when ill but otherwise only before bed.

Toddlers don't need milk at all. It's not necessary. Mine had none after self weaning from breast at 11months, apart for that in yoghurt, cheese and cereal.

Eve4Walle · 12/04/2009 17:54

Just found this relating to Milk and toddlers/children.

Children
Children should drink whole milk until they are at least two years old because they may not get as many calories as they need from semi-skimmed milk.

*After the age of two, children can gradually move to semi-skimmed milk as a main drink, as long as they are eating well and getting plenty of calories and nutrients from a varied diet.

Don't give skimmed or 1% milk to children until they're at least five years old because it's too low in calories. Skimmed milk contains only very small amounts of vitamin A, which children need.

Children between the ages of one and three need to have about 350mg of calcium a day. About 300ml milk (three fifths of a pint) would provide this.*

I was always told by my HV (both times) that Milk continues to be an inportant source of calcium well beyond 1 year of age, in addition to cheese and yogurt.

My 13mo has about 4oz when he gets up, 2-3ozs at about 3pm and another 4-5 at bedtime, he also drinks a lot of water during the day. This seems quite a lot less than others but he doesn't seem to need any more than that. He's still on formula as I have 2 tins left but once they are finished it will be cows milk only.

PigeonPair · 12/04/2009 21:46

My DD is 9 months. She has a bottle first thing and a bottle before bed. I am about to drop her 3pm bottle as she is losing interest in it. In general, I am finding she is really going off her milk (in bottles I mean) but she does have it in cereal, cheese sauce etc. and would eat yoghut all day if she could!!

LoveBeingAMummy · 13/04/2009 20:23

Thanks everyone, she has ceral most days and a yogurt as well.

thats interesting eve4walle about the skimmed milk containing less vitamin a

DS1 has never really been keen on cows milk and after trying for ages to get him to drink full fat milk, he now will just about tolerate semi-skimmed although he prefers skimmed. Have discussed this with the HV who has been fantastic and she said that SS milk is better than no milk. DS1 doesnt really like anything creamy or rich such as cheese sauces, creamy puddings, thick yogarts and fromage frais.

LoveBeingAMummy · 16/04/2009 08:31

Also does it matter that she still has it in a bottle?
