Toddlers milk intate

Apart from milk in cereal, cooking etc, how much milk do toddlers normally drink at 2? Mine seems to have gone off his bedtime milk, having less than 50ml, preferring water. Is this normal? TIA

We are seeing a nutritionist at the moment as we are having a great many issues with feeding our alomost 17 month old. She said that in general toddlers drink too much milk filling up on it and not soilds. The calcium they need is 500mg - a yogart and a slice of cheese, so not much really! Iron is the most important thing to get into them without over doing the fibre etc. So all in all as long as your getting 500mg in to your LO I wouldn't worry!

my 2yo is drinking very little whole milk, only some with his weetabix in the morning and that's it. so roughly 200mls. we have to rely on him eating cheese, ice cream and other similar foods, because he just won't drink milk cold or hot anymore.
sorry for rambling, really not sure how much they are meant to drink at this age.

oops looks like my ds is having too much. He always has a full cup of milk at bedtime and usually has cereal for breakfast, plus he'll usually have a yoghurt during the day, and maybe some cheese at some point (though not always)

Great, thanks guys - I feel reassured, he has plenty of yogurt/cheese etc as well. Tryingtobe - I hope you get things sorted with the nutritionist

That's fine as long as he eats soilds well Headfairy - our LO eats no lunch or tea so we have had to remove all milk and snacks, it had just started to work but not he has a stomach bug!!

HeadFairy · 11/04/2009 19:44

He usually does eat ok. Ups and downs but that's toddlers for you. I stopped giving him milk in the morning for that very reason. He only ever has milk after his tea so he won't fill up on the milk without eating.

There is a big obssesion with milk in the western culture but it really isn't as essential as we've all been brainwashed to think.

Why do we need to give our children milk? As far as I am aware it is because of the calcium and fat content.

Milk/dairy is not the best source of calcium and fat.

Tahini
Black Strap Molasses
Figs (dried or fresh)
Orange Juice
Dark Green Veg (excluding spinach)

Are superior sources of calcium. Fat from fatty fish, olive oil, tahini and flaxeed are far more healthier than the fat found in milk.

As tryingtobemarypoppins said, iron is more important at this stage. Please be aware that calcium can hinder the bodies ability to absorb calcium - anybody that took iron tablets whilst pregnant should know this as it is on the information leaflets enclosed within the packet.

Morelikemiranda you have cheered me up a bit now, was worried for a bit about DS maybe not getting enough calcium, but he has a very varied diet from all the food groups that are essential. he eats more fromage frais and cheese rather than drinking milk. maybe one day he'll enjoy drinking it!lol

thanks to OP for bringing up this topic, as I was curious myself about toddler's intake of calcium.
