Do all babies go a bit bonkers when first crawling?!

DS, 7.5 months, just getting to grips with crawling and he's like a whirling dervish. Doesn't want to be cuddled or sit on knees. He just wants to try and crawl all the time, even when breastfeeding! He's also refusing to nap, although fortunately night-time sleep is so far unaffected. One minute he wants to be independent but then if you leave the room he starts to cry.

It's like someone has slipped him some Pro-plus! I am guessing this is all normal developmental behaviour...reassure me...

Yes, my dd is older but there is some of the same behavioiur.

Changeing her nappy has become very problematic because she refuses to lie still.

He'll probably settle down once he's mastered it, for a short while anyway until he moves on to the next thing!

When my DD started to crawl she seemed to grow very independent but still like someone to be in the room with her IYSWIM. From the day she started crawling she has never stopped and is now a 16.5mo running around wearing me out lol.

I think that first taste of independence for them makes them go a bit crazy, as now they can get what they want on their own. We had to baby proof the living room as DD only crawled for a few days then walked and was in to EVERYTHING

RaspberryBlower - Oh yes, the nappy changes...don't talk to me about the nappy changes!

I could have posted this. DD is 11mths today and started crawling last week. She has gone nuts! She keeps waking up from her nap after a few mins as she has managed to sit up in the corner of her cot and can't get back down. She usually goes down for her lunch nap at 1pm. Today, she just wouldn't sleep. She just wanted to crawl. She eventually went to sleep at 3pm.

Also, she wants to be on top of me all the time and has been crying when I leave the room which she never did before.
Let's hope it is just a phase!

A bit late i know, but I`m with you all on this one. My 10mo old has been crawling for about a month and has become a nightmare.

I am really strugling with the nappy changes and on several occasions have just had to walk away for a minute as I am SO scared I will loose my temper with her and refusing to lie still. We had a dirty nappy this evening before her bath and ended up with it everywhere, all over the bathroom floor etc. I actually nearly cried (DH gone out for evening)which upsets me even more. I actually feel like I am not coping.

We are also now having sleep issues. Used to be a really good sleeper, now just stands up in her cot and cries. And tries to crawl at night

ok, I needed to rant a bit to make me feel better

My dd started crawling last month and I am also having a nightmare with nappy changes. She had a week of crawling about her cot but she hasnt been that exited about crawling around the floor-she's more interested in pulling up on things and trying to leap from one surface to another with no heed to gravity. I have to find a new thing for her to hold everytime I change her nappy.

Same here Valleys,
10 MO DD has been crawling for about 3 weeks and I have to continually find interesting things for her to inspect whilst I scramble to change her nappy before she decides to roll over and bolt!

Artifarti: I read in a really good book "Wonderweeks" that the restlessness and refusal to sleep is all about processing their new skill in their brain - once theyve done this they settle down again. My DD went through a stage of waking up at 0430 and refusing to go back to sleep the week she started crawling! nightmare!

She used to go through a quiet stage during the bedtime hour and be all sleepy but now she crawls around like shes wired up to the mains and we have to try a lot harder to get her to calm down and feel sleepy.

Seeing her crawl across the landing in the buff to her bath for the first time, every single movement really overstated with her flinging her arms up in the air every time she lifted them to move them forward made it all worthwhile though. It was soooo cute.

Oh Tetty I think i'm a bit hormonal today but that description of your daughter crawling just made me well up

TettyLouBar · 15/04/2009 20:15

Oh bless you! Its so silly what sets you off after having a wee one! I cry at the most ridiculous and unexpected things.

She just looked so amazed with herself! I love seeing her crawl about but its very tiring isn't it! (She makes me well up all the time with her cuteness)

yes and they don't stop. and walking is worse
