dylsmum1998 · 10/04/2009 21:46

ds had one and i got rid at 6 months.
dd never had one

Lilyloo · 10/04/2009 21:48

Both of them were 3 , intend to do the same with dd2
They can understand and appreciate the alternative dummy fairy present ime

onepieceofcremeegg · 10/04/2009 21:48

dd1 didn't want one.

dd2 still has hers at 20 months. Our intention is to let her keep it for now (sleep times only) until she is old enough to negotiate with in a few months.

IwishIwasmorechocolatey · 10/04/2009 22:03

ds1 wou;d never accept one

ds2 - 7 months to help him sleep better - he woke every time it dropped out !!

Heated · 10/04/2009 22:05

ds1, at about 7-8m once he started waking to find it - got rid of it then

dd2 never wanted one

Jojay · 10/04/2009 22:07

DS1 - went off it, and bottles, at 11 months
DS2 - went off it at 3 months. Won't take bottle at all!

No battles or negotiations with either of them

suwoo · 10/04/2009 22:12

DD was 3 nearly four. Father Christmas took them to the poor children.

DS is 2.4 and I will ditch it when he is ready.

I had terrible teeth and years of orthodontics due to sucking my thumb and I really didn't want my kids to go through that. I almost forced dummies upon them.

easterchickfordinner · 10/04/2009 22:19

DD1 - 2.5
DS1 - 1.5

DD1 would like us to have another baby so it can have dummies

needmorehoursinaweek · 10/04/2009 22:27

I could never get mine to take a dummy.

But can remember my mum burning dummies belonging to my DB when he was nearly 3. It was Christmas eve and she threw them into the open fire and told him that Santa didn't come to babies with dummies! . It did work!

Seona1973 · 10/04/2009 22:36

dd - never really took to one
ds - got rid of it at 5 1/2 months as he kept waking for it every hour or so

giantkatestacks · 10/04/2009 22:41

ds - would never take one
dd - got rid of it at 12 weeks after she started waking for it when it had fallen out every hour

spottypushedherbabyout · 10/04/2009 22:43

DS1 had one 3-6wks but wouldn't take one after that (screamed pretty much until 4mths)

DS2 is 5 wks, screams alot but wont take one at all despite DH forcing it on him encouraging him regularly. Please god dont let it last 4 months again!!!

I hate dummies and when I was niave and childless, always said I wouldn't use them...

Hulababy · 10/04/2009 23:07

DD had one as we found it helped her colic. After she was a few weeks od and the colic had dropped she only had it for sleep times or if ill. She was restricted with it durig the day and def never allowed it if eating, drinking or "talking". We got rid of it entirely when she was about 2.5y - she gave it to her auntie's new kitten so it wouldn't miss it's own mummy She asked for it once or twice the first night and then never again.

My pet hate is seeing babies and toddlers with dummies in their mouth all day long, trying to tak with them, etc.

fledtoscotland · 10/04/2009 23:10

DS1 (18months) would still have one 24/7 given the chance but he is only allowed to have it in the car or in bed

DS2 is 7months and has one for naps/car/cot but DS1 is constantly trying to steal it.

my mum is a dummy-hater and as a result, i sucked my thumb well into adulthood and have the teeth to prove it. Am not in a major rush to loose the dummy totally as long as its gone before primary school

PinkTulips · 10/04/2009 23:13

dd just gave hers to santa last xmas, aged 3 years 11 months. she got a doll's house in exchange and is happy with that. she was given it as a newborn as she was incredibly sucky and had reflux and colic so it was imo necessary for all our sakes

ds1 is 2.9 and still has his although i've taken to hiding it during the day (because he keeps losing them outisde rather than any other reason really!) he'll give his to santa next xmas. he was also quite a sucky baby and with a close gap in ages between him and dd there were lots of times i simply couldn't feed for hours on end for comfort so gave the dummy at 5 weeks and he loved it from day one.

ds2 is 2 months and hasn't really taken to his dummy the way the other 2 did and i'm delighted about that but still have dummies to give him while he's awake if he's cross and i can't feed or he's fed too much and is sicking up but is still sucky, like i said though he's not overly interested.

cheekster · 10/04/2009 23:14

DS had one to help with his colic but I took it off him at about 4 months when he kept waking every hour for it putting back in, Im soooooo glad I did. Id imagine it would be so much harder if he was older.

Linnet · 10/04/2009 23:15

dd1 took it away at about 18 months she only ever got it at bedtime at night, never during the day.
dd2 never had one

Martha200 · 12/04/2009 14:22

ds1 - 4mths, started to wake for it so out it went! 2 nights of hell followed by no problems and all well.
ds2 - 9mths - he never relied on it for sleeping, so when his dad came back from an overseas trip which also coincided with ds having no cold for a change and feeling ok, I thought I would see how far we could go without it... it was a successful attempt.

Portoeufino · 12/04/2009 14:30

dd 3. It got to the point where she only had it at night, and would only have the SAME ONE! So the dummy fairy took it, and left her a small pressie.

ahfeckit · 12/04/2009 14:41

DS nearly 2yo and only allowed dummy for naps and bedtime, or if he is unwell. I also agree with a PP, that it's unsightly to see toddlers with a dummy in all of the time (even when they are trying to talk).

ahfeckit · 12/04/2009 14:42

meant to add, we hope to get DS off the dummy before he goes to nursery. will see how that goes...

ElenorRigby · 12/04/2009 16:08

DD had a dummy briefly for a month or so. She refused it at 3 months.

clumsymum · 12/04/2009 16:15

DS had a dummy from the very beginning, but gave them up himself for no reason I could fathom when he was 4 months. Never really became a thumb sucker either, But is a dreadful nail-biter now (aged 9).

I wonder if there is any connection?

BlameItOnTheBogey · 12/04/2009 16:16

4 months here. He started to wake up for it during the night so we slung it. Was a rough week but really glad we persevered.
