toddler hair maintenance nightmare!

hi!

anyone got a toddler with very fine hair? mine just gets knots all the time which have to be cut out, they're so bad. on one side she has a baldy patch where i've hacked em out! she's not very keen on brushing, mostly because of the tangles. i've tried spray in conditioner which helps a little bit, any other suggestions short of going with the 'dreadlocks' or having it all cropped off? i'm not a fussy mum, not looking for perfection, but my little girl is starting to look like a yetti...please tell me i'm not alone !

my dd has ringlet type curls and only way can tame hers is to chuck her in bath with condtioner on then rinse and brush while wet otherwise no chance of brush through

Try a "Tangle Teaser" comb (sorry can't do links but sold in lots of on-line shops).

BiscuitStuffer · 05/04/2009 21:35

Ah yes mine has this problem too. She fiddles with her hair when she drinks her milk or is tired, resulting in a tangle. I just get a normal comb and hold her hair below the knot and gently comb the knot out starting from the end and working my way in. They come out pretty easily once you get the technique sussed!

my 3yr old boy has V fine V blond hair, but I keep it short- 18mm all over so not a problem with tangles.

Yurtgirl · 05/04/2009 21:38

I have had great success with a large toothed easy to hold comb that I got from Wilkinsons! (available in purple or turquoise for about 50p)

I comb a tiny bit at a time, gradually adding a bit more - she still fusses but can be distracted with charlie and lola!

HTH

tangle teezer. I swear by mine. My two dds won't have their hairbrushed with anything else.

dd2 says "owch" when she spots a normal brush and dd1 runs as far as she get in the opposite direction.

used2bthin · 05/04/2009 21:45

Can anyone tell me where you can buy tangle teasers? Myy DD has got very curly hair and it is getting harder and hardr to get a brush through it. Are they all £10 ish or was that just the special edition one in the link?

gigglechick · 05/04/2009 21:56

count me in, thanks for the tips on the tangle teezer! I recently got a pump-spray of Johnsons baby/kid stuff which works on 3yo DD's really curly baby-hair, so far so good. She's another one who shouts "ouwww mummy owww owww" on the mere sight of a hairbrush.

gigglechick · 05/04/2009 22:01

£9.49, free p&p
Amazon do them too.
Still googling for cheaper

used2bthin · 05/04/2009 22:07

I just got that Johnsons stuff too gigglechick, after someone told me Aussie miracle wasn't a good plan for such a little girl! Thanks for the link I think I will order one of those too.

stickylittlefingers · 05/04/2009 22:09

Is it all over - I ask because my dd2 gets bad knots on the back of her head because she seems to rub her head up and down when asleep - anyway, I can put grown up conditioner on the back of her head and wash it off again without it going anywhere near her eyes. That seems to do the trick, tho between the washes she does look like a mini swampy!

damdaffs · 07/04/2009 10:31

hiya, sorry not been on here!

thanks for all the suggestions, will deffo check out the tangle teaser comb. spooky too, i have been using aussie miracle on her!

stickyfingers, yes, it is a back of the head thing....if i get it smooth at bathtime by the morning its all backcombed and mad, i swear she does it on purpose...haha, a surefire way to wind mummy up...glad you've got a little swampy too anyway

Tangle teezer is fabulous, also silk pillowcases.

purpleduck · 07/04/2009 10:39

Perhaps plait her hair at bedtime...?
I started that when my dd was small, and helps keep her hair tangle free.

Ah I see you are all helping with suggestions, I on the otherhand am not such a good parent and have told DD if she doesn't let me brush her hair some passing bird will mistake it for a nest.

suiledonn · 08/04/2009 22:47

Hi damdaffs, my dd is nearly 3 and we have been struggling with this for ages. I have contemplated cutting out the dreads she has at the back but her hair is very thin and she would be bald. After doing some research I am waiting to hear back from a salon that supplies a dreadlock removing detangler that is supposed to be good for kid's hair. DD hates having her hair washed and brushed. I took her to the hairdresser and she got so hysterical we had to leave with nothing done. It is a nightmare. I know everyone looks at her and probably thinks we neglect her but she seems to have a real phobia about it.

Wonderstuff · 08/04/2009 22:54

My dds hair is really fine and I fine Avon's kids detangler spray is good. The tangle teezer looks like a good investment too.
