When did you get rid of the push chair?

DS's buggy broke yesturday, hopefully Mothercare will repair/ replace it but it got me thinking, at what age do you get rid of the thing all together and make em walk.

DS will be 3 this summer.

I kept mine until DS was 4, but then only used it if we were going somewhere all day like a theme park etc.

I've stopped letting ds1 (2.11) use the pushchair recently (although I'd make an exception if we were out all day somewhere like London and he was tired).

The reason I've stopped is because I now struggle to push a double pushchair with ds2 (13mo) in it too. Can just about manage on pavements but can't on grass or country paths. I wouldn't have felt any urgency in stopping if I just had one dc, I imagine.

sweetkitty · 05/04/2009 13:45

DD1 was just over 3 although I think she would happily still go in one from time to time.

DD2 refused to go in her's since her 3rd birthday

crokky · 05/04/2009 13:55

My DS is still in one (age 3.0). This is beca\use I have a DD as well (1.0) and I can't chase DS with a baby in tow.

dd is 2.10. we still use hers but only if we're walking somewhere that will take 45 minutes walking at my pace or 3 hours if walking at her pace...

normal school run, walking into town etc i don't bother.

we're going away for a couple of days over easter and i am Not Taking The Pushchair.

i am hoping this is a good idea...

bergentulip · 05/04/2009 16:25

3 yrs

Had a buggy board for DS1 when Ds2 was born, DS1 then 2.8, so he stood on the board for about 4mths.

Then he had to walk, cos I wanted to get the lightweight maclaren back out and get rid of the tank!

EdwardCullensWife · 05/04/2009 16:47

DS2 was nearly 4. He walked a lot too but if we were out shopping without the pushchair and he got tired he'd refuse to walk any further and I'd end up having to carry him and the shopping. Not worth the hassle.

EdwardCullensWife · 05/04/2009 16:48

Also I'm really impatient and hate walking at toddler pace.

Mooseheart · 05/04/2009 16:50

2 yrs with dd1, 3.5 and counting with dd2...

coppertop · 05/04/2009 19:24

Depends on the child and your individual circumstances.

Ds1 tired very easily (still does) and eventually stopped at around 3.5yrs.

Ds2 was physically ready before 2yrs but was a runner so stayed in it until nearer the age of 2.5yrs - 3yrs.

Dd was ready before 2yrs and now only uses it when she's really tired.

We have no car so go most places on foot or by public transport.

tassisssss · 05/04/2009 19:28

ds was 3.5 when his wee sister was born so that was the end of the buggy for him. We did really struggle for a while and it meant I could no longer do long walks (like into town and home again). I had a buggy board for a while but didn't really like it. By the time ds was 4 he was walking longer distances no bother.

At 21 months dd was looking like she'd not want a buggy for much longer but 10 months later she's well into it! For me it's way easier to push them so I'm happy.

squatchette · 05/04/2009 19:30

I kept hold of my beloved P&T until dds were about 3 and 4 .Wasn't really ever using past the eldest being 3 so took it to the tip around 3 days before finding out I was 5 months pregnant with dd3.That's sods law for you.

FAQinglovely · 05/04/2009 19:34

"I don't like to see children that can walk/ should walk in pushchairs. "

and how exactly do you define them as being abl eot walk/should be being able to walk??

my DS1 only started walking at just over 18 months, he stayed in a pushchair until he was just over 3. I walked everywhere and a trip into town was a 2 miles trek.

DS2 walked at 10 months, was out of the pushchair by about 2 1/2 - lived close to most things.

DS3 - 22 months - can walk the school run trip - but it takes 50 minutes if he's walking (15/20 minutes if he's not) and I think he'll been in the pushchair until he's over 3, possibly heading to 3 1/2 - and yes I may even use the pushchair to take him to or from nursery when he starts as well.

coppertop · 05/04/2009 19:39

Someone on a similar thread made an interesting point (IMO) about how strapping a child into a pushchair isn't all that different to strapping a child into a car seat, especially if you are only driving a short distance.

missmapp · 05/04/2009 19:43

Ds1 was about 2.6, but that was a mixture of him wanting to walk everywhere and me hating the double buggy, ds2 is only 18mths but will probably be in it longer as I dont know if I can give it up, where do you put the shopping!!

Wallace · 05/04/2009 19:52

It really does depend on the individual child and your circumstances.

Ds2 is 3 in July and very rarely goes in a pushchair. I did take the pushchair on a day out the other day, but really only to carry the picnic

If I ever did any traipsing around a shopping centre (fat chance) I pushchair would be very necessary!

MrsFogi · 05/04/2009 19:55

I've still got mine for the walk to school with dd (3 yrs 4 mths) each morning as we'd never get there otherwise - it's a 45 minute walk with lots of hills.

shonaspurtle · 05/04/2009 19:59

We've hardly used it since he was about 20 months, but we live in the city with great public transport so he doesn't really ever walk very long distances without at least the option of hopping on a bus or a train.

I will admit to having, until recently, carried him to nursery (not far) if we're running late. Luckily he's pretty small...

The main reason behind this though is the fact we live up so many stairs. Far easier to get out without the buggy.

elvislives · 05/04/2009 20:01

DH refused to take the buggy on holiday when DS3 was 3.5 because he "wasn't a baby". He spent a week carrying him everywhere

DD1 was walking everywhere at 2.5

pavlovthepregnantcat · 05/04/2009 20:04

we stopped using it at 2. DD walks (or rather, runs) everywhere. There is no carrying, I would not even mind carrying her once in a while but she is a very strong girl who does not tire easily.

It was, by the time we stopped using it, a pain as she could get out of the straps so we could not strap her in, and therefore we did not strap her in, which meant she got out when she wanted and run, so we were chasing her while pushing the pushchair aswell. Right pain.

We do take it in the car from time to time now in case she ever gets exhausted, but it does not seem to happen.

pavlovthepregnantcat · 05/04/2009 20:05
wabbit · 05/04/2009 20:05

It was gradual, ds wouldn't want buggy now 3.5 but up until he was 3 we used it occassionally if we were out for a long time.

dd never had one, I totally refused to be seen dead with one!

MissisBoot · 05/04/2009 20:06

DD still uses it at nearly 4 - however - we walk into town - one mile up hill and then walk back home again - if she's tired after that I'd rather she hopped into the pushchair for a power nap to get her through the rest of the day.

Its safer for her to be strapped in on the way back home rather than juggling a preschooler and bags of shopping.

I don't understand why people think that children should be without pushchairs as soon as possible.

Agree coppertop - its no different to sitting in a car seat for a short journey.
