My newborn DD is 9 days old and seems to be really strong and can hold her head up for a second or two and lift it slightly of my chest.. i thought she would be alot more floppy she was born a good 8lb 5oz.

Did your newborns have some head control? not concerned obviously im glad shes strong and doing well just a general wondering x

This is going to sound really smug but dd and ds both held thier heads up for a good few seconds from day 1. They could also lie on thier front and lift thier head up from about 2 weeks. I just assumed it was normal but everyone tells me not!

yes, pretty normal behaviour.....sorry to spoil your moment....but, a lot of newborns can do this....including all of mine...and I don't think they are anything special (well, to me they are....but ykwim)

This is a natural thing in newborns. It helps them root about and find their way to the breast.

Are you breastfeeding? If you are, then you should try biological nurturing to see it in action!!

I think this is common with bigger babies. Dd held her head up, eyes wde open, when she was placed on my chest after she was born. With her tangled wet curly hair and sticking her tongue right out - She was like some kind of swamp monster!

The tongue thing is consistent with the instinct for them to feed too. Eyes open also helps them to find their way to the nipple!
