Having a neurotic moment re 14 wk old DD's development...

Should my DD be laughing?? She's not, though she smiles a lot and chats away to us in ah-goos and ah-boos and other cute little sounds and noises. But all her little friends - most of whom are younger by a few weeks - seem to be laughing.

Also, should she be reaching for things? whenever I go around to a friend's house, her DS is grabbing away at dangling things but DD is much more interested in staring at me and DH, or stuffing both her hands in her mouth

I do worry rather a lot about her because she was very poorly at birth and is such a tiny little thing (plus she's had a horrible cold for a week or so and hardly put on any weight at all in the last couple of weeks)

Is there anything unusual here, am I just being neurotic and is there anything I can do to encourage her to laugh .... ?

DD didn't laugh until she was about 5 months old. DSs all laughed before they were 2 months old. All totally normal. Don't worry.

dont panic all sounds normal think my ds was few moths old when started laughing 16-17 weeks i think they all move at different rates so stop comparing its the worst thing to do as you will be always worried otherwise

KiwiPanda · 29/03/2009 18:29

Bublacgirl - you're right, I must stop comparing, it does my head in. It's good to know it sounds normal though.

Well at least I don't compare sleeping... that would REALLY make me weep since I swear everyone elses baby I know (in the flesh, rather than on mn!) seems to be sleeping through the night...

As the mother of a 14 week old, you're perfectly entitled to be bonkers, but you know you are being!!

KiwiPanda · 29/03/2009 18:34

bonkers, me?? never

Mind you if you think that's bonkers, i swear DS said "Derek" last night...!!

my ds was 9 mths before he slept through and then from 19 mths has never slept through lol not trying to scare you but once again all our angels are different my ds still needed night feeds up until 18 mths then just stopped

I remember panicking that DD wasn't laughing at 12 weeks. Think she finally started giggling at 15 weeks, after repeated raspberry-blowing on her tummy!

DD is now 8 years old and her laughing skills are on a par with the rest of her class ! Try not to worry!

Marthasmama · 29/03/2009 18:51

Kiwi - maybe you're just not very funny! DD is nearly 6 months and laughed for the first time two weeks ago. She will still only laugh at her brother, her mummy, OWWWWWWWWWWW dd just punched me in the eye!!! Sorry, her mummy, it would seem is just not very amusing.

piscesmoon · 29/03/2009 19:05

She shouldn't be doing anything. Just enjoy her-she will do it in her own time.

pinata · 29/03/2009 21:39

i don't think my DD laughed properly until she was 5 months or so - try not to worry. it's very hard early on when they do relatively little and you're just dying for the next milestone
