2 year old not speaking

My sister's 2 year old isn't speaking and I'm beginning to wonder if there's a problem or not.

I've heard him say 'Whatisit' a couple of times, and 'Daaydo' which we think means 'dinosaur' (but he does use this word loads and at everything, it just gets louder when he sees a dinosaur) but he says literally nothing else at all - not mama, or dada or anything. He does point at what he wants though, and manages to get his point across usually.

He can definitely hear as he responds to being told not to do something, but he seems to struggle when he's asked to do things i.e. 'Go and pick that up and bring it here'.

He's going for a hearing test anyway in a couple of weeks, so we'll see what comes of that.

Do you think this is normal?

I think you are right to be concerned, more because his understanding seems limited rather than speech. Its slower end of development to say no real words at 2, but if they have full understanding of get your shoes/coat etc its not such a worry iyswim.
average is 6-20 words by 18mths.
about 50 by 2yrs with the odd 2 words put together.
They are all different though and many children say nothing but within a few weeks speak in sentences, almost as though they needed the confidence to try it iyswim.
Glad he has a hearing test booked as things like glue ear can cause deafness which hinders speech development.

possibly a problem - but if he's going for a hearing test sis is clearly speaking to HV or GP about it, and IMO it is pretty likely there will be a SALT referral after the hearing test (hearing test is a bogstandard check for any kid with a language problem, even if there isn't any massive concern about hearing). Keep your language simple and consistent, and support what you say with gestures/visuals (e.g. pictures in books/photos) where appropriate when you talk to him.

My 2 yo ds didn't say much either and was a good year behind in speech compared to his sisters. Boys often are slower so I wasn't worried. He's now 3 and chattering away so I was right not to be worried. Mums must trust their instincts. Does he give good eye contact? No eye contact with no speech would make me very worried. Hearing tests are carried out on newborns these days.

The newborn hearing test only checks for congenital hearing deficiency. Glue ear or excessive wax build up from colds can cause deafness/hearing impairment at any age, so it should always be checked when there are concerns about speech and/or understanding.
