Teething seems to be going on forever...

DS started showing symptoms of teething at 4 months, went on for ages, subsided a bit (painwise) after some cranial osteopathy, but still shows other symptoms, now at 8 months the pain is back again and still no teeth!

Has anyone had this long duration of a teething period? Is there any hope the teeth will actually start to break through soon? Feel fed up for him, plus he has never yet slept through and I don't feel there is much we can do about cutting out his night feeds while he's suffering...

Oh crikey yes. Ds was such a dribbler from approx 3 months that everyone commented on it and said his teeth were about to start coming through... the occasional red cheek etc too. He was two weeks off his 1st birthday before he actually got his first teeth! (Now has almost all of them at 2 and a half.)

Are you sure it is teething pain?

I am sure the teeth must move about at various stages before they come through so it might explain it but just wondered why you particularly think it's teething.

My 4.4 month old ds has, seems to be in teething pain too.Im not sure though. He always trying to bite something things and put anything in his mouth. Hes ok awake, but when we put him down to sleep at night he starts moaning, and crying like he is in pain?
I can't think what else it could be? maybe wind?

I do hope he gets his teeth early and is all over soon.

We were convinced both DS and DD were teething from 3 months onwards because of all the dribbling. Neither of them cut their first tooth till 10 months.

I remember reading somewhere that some babies get lots of saliva when their stomachs are maturing, around 3 months, but I'm not quite sure if that's correct or not.
But also it is apparently painful when the teeth start to come down and move around, way before they cut through.

Wind is a distinct possibility. Always appears to be soooo painful, and often more prevalent at night-time. Tummy massage and pushing knees to the chest can help a little bit but you probably know that already.

Hope he settles for night soon.

hi tinierclanger my baby boy started suffering teething from 4 months as well. his first tooth has only just come through at 10 months. i bought a munchkin to relieve the pain a bit. it is a teething ring that you can put cold food in. it cools there gums giving them a bit of relief. it also helps cut them teeth through. i put strawberrys and alsorts in them. there is also no fear of them choking with this gadget. hope this helps. you can get them from toys r us.

Hi all, thanks for responsese.

I can't of course be sure it is teething pain but all the chewing, dribbling, red cheeks etc make me think the pain is from teething rather than anything else. Can see lots of lumps under his gums as well so I suspect it is all the teeth moving about but not cutting. I guess it could be wind or indigestion but he's had that in the past and done things like pulled his legs up, and he's not doing that.

He's not too bad in the daytime and has lots of different teething gadgets, it's night time really when I suppose, he wakes, feels uncomfortable, and hasn't got anything to shove in his mouth other than his fists!

DS1 started teething at 3 months - his first tooth arrived at 13 months! He's now almost 3 and still teething as his last 4 back molars are working their way through. It really does feel like teething goes on for ever, but he has got much better over time at dealing with the teething pain and now can tell us when it is hurting so we can give him calgel for his gums and medised at night for the pain...

DS is still going strong at 18m (got most of his teeth around 14m after teething for 11m).
