Dd (2 years 8 months) wants to wear knickers not nappies. She can hold her wee in for hours, until she's pressing her knees together and really grouchy with discomfort. Then she gets upset when the inevitable happens and she ends up standing in a small pond. But she won't wee on the potty or the loo. She sits on both quite happily, but she won't oblige. Any suggestions?

My dd was the same, taking her nappy off and insisting on big girl pants but wetting them all the time. She almost always went on the floor, it was only luck that she did some in the toilet. Then suddenly, a few weeks later, something clicked and she ran to the toilet and went there. She's been almost completely dry since (only the odd accident when she's really engrossed in something and forgets!) So no suggestions really, just give her a bit more time and hopefully the same will happen

Same her dd3 has been dry for 2 months now she is 2yrs 9months. And it was a while of wet knickers but she soon found this to be yukky and ran for the toilet. She hated the potty had to be the toilet only.

She only has the very rare wet knickers at bed time now as she wont even wear pull ups to bed.

My dd loved being told what a good girl she was with a big thumbs up. Only thing is now when she comes to the toilet with me whether at home or to public loos. she anouces very loudly " mummy your a good girl you did a wee!" My angel

I would explain that if she wants to year pants then she needs to use the loo or potty. And if not, back in nappys for a while. Sounds harsh, but she obviously isn't ready x

we used to appauld like ds had won an oscar or anoble prize whenever he first started without a nappy. he also used to get a treat whenever he did a wee/poo on the potty or toilet. that progressed to stickers and when he got so many he got a treat.

PlumBumMum · 26/03/2009 19:22

Roskva I seen someone on here point out you can get stickers that go in potty and change colour when pee'd on (i think this is how they worked) might encourage her to pee in potty,
my dd has just started and went brilliant for the first couple of weeks now she seems to be leaving it to the last min to go to potty, although completely dry at night, so I can't have it both ways just yet

PlumBumMum · 26/03/2009 19:23

this is it

I think I'll give those a go. So far huge applause on the couple of occasions she managed it, and -bribery- persuasion in the forn of normal stickers and chocolate buttons hasn't worked. I think when she wees in the potty it splashes back up against her, so I'm also looking for a deeper potty.

we made a treat box. box full of cheap stuff that ds loves, plus a few chocolate coins etc. he got to choose what he had as a treat for going.

I would recommend a sticker chart. Every time she uses the potty she gets a sticker on the chart (buy some that she loves - gold stars, hearts, barbies, whatever). Tell her when she reaches (say) ten stickers she gets a prize (you agree what with her). It 's worth a try. If this doesn't work leave it for a while and try again.

Roskva · 26/03/2009 21:18

The sticker chart is not a great success - she's not interested unless she can get her mits on all the stickers; she has temper tantrums when I refuse to give her a sticker on demand

I remember reading an old thread on Mumsnet where a clever mummy suggested a bowl or small bucket hanging above the toilet (or on a high shelf out of child´s reach) full of wrapped up little presents (just small treats) and everytime the little one used the toilet they reached in and pulled out a present to unwrap. Might be worth a try...
