Is 7.15/30 too early a bedtime for a 7 mo?

DS has started sleeping a bit better at night recently, with 0-1 wakings. But he has also started waking up 5.30ish and then going back to bed a couple of hours later for 2 hours. Someone today said that it's because he goes to bed too early and doesn't need 11-12 hours sleep. He goes to bed when he does because he's tired by then and I'm not sure he is getting enough sleep or he wouldn't be asleep half the morning.

What time do other babies go to bed? Is it possible that he's going too early? I have a feeling that it's more a combinatin of teething and light mornings but she made me think...

not at all. DS is 22mo and he is usually in bed by 7, and asleep by 8 after chatting to his toys for a while.

hi there - hows you? I would say thats about right for that age and whenever we have put ours down later - been out and about etc then it has made no difference at all and she stil wakes up at 6am...

I think its more likely to be the light mornings as well and (sadly) thats just the time they wake up - we just go to bed earlier...

no - not at all

All 5 babies in my NCT group go to bed at 7 (they are all around 8monthish) 2 of them sleep 7-7, unfort that does not include mine! Each baby is individual but if yours is falling asleep by 7 then that sounds like his bedtime and unfortunatly for you 5:30am is his wake-up time - you could try black-out blinds?

Could you cut down his nap from 2 hours in the morning to 1? Or do a milk feed at 5:30 and see if this gets him back to sleep?

I wouldnt say it was too early at all. My DC are 13 months and 3.5 and both go to bed at the same time of 7pm. They have had this bedtime since birth...although would obviously wake for feeds after this in the early days but would be fed in the bedroom and not got back up iykwim.
DS sometimes decides to start the day at 6am so we have tried a later bedtime but it didnt make any difference to his early rising and he'd get really tired and upset during the extra hour we kept him up.
I would say most young children/babies do need 11-12 hours sleep. What about his daytime sleep? If he is napping too much during the day this can affect their night time sleep.

7pm has always been DS's bedtime. He used to be an early riser, when he was your son's age he would be up at 5.30 too (although 5am was not unheard of!) but once he started only having one nap a day at 11months he slept later in the morning. Now at 17 months he usually wakes up around 6.30am and if he's at home, has a nap of 2-3 hours.

Thanks everyone, I didn't think it was too early! Someone else suggested cutting his morning nap so might try that. He normally has 2 - 3.5 hours naps during the day, which I don't think is that much, is it?

Unfortunately being fed does not get him back to sleep. Nothing does! He is teething badly so I think that's probably not helping. When I go to see him in the morning he's usually chewing on his arm/toy/cot.

Ah well, I was never a night owl anyway...

Oh blimey! My 2.2 year old and 9 month old are nearly always in bed before 7 - have been known to have them both to sleep by 6.15 . It's not because I'm a dragon (well, not only..) - from an early age they've both been exhausted very early on. In fact, until we moved closer to OH's work (which makes it worth DDs staying up to see him) DD1 went to bed at 6 every night, exhausted. We now work on 7 as bedtime but she often WANTS to go to bed earlier (and DD2 too).

They are early wakers (6.30 at the latest) but I found that putting them to bed later either made them wake up even earlier or wake up at the same time and just be grotty because they're still tired.

7 pm really isn't too early - my DS was going down at 6:30 pm at that age and sleeping until 6/6:30 am. His naps sound fine (you did mean that he sleeps a total of 3.5 hours a day?). I think it definitely has something to do with the light - my DS who is two, has just started waking with the sun - a couple of weeks ago he was up at around 6:30 am, his normal waking time normally being 7 am, and now it's moved to 6 am which is when it's starting to get light now. He's only falling asleep around 8:30 pm (even though I put him down at 7:30....) so he's only getting a total of about 9.5 hours a night and is very grumpy now in the mornings. He started doing the same thing last year too around this time and was eventually waking at 5:15 am!!! Am SO investing in some black out blinds this year, pronto!!!
