19month old - rubbing herself against things - normal behaviour?!?!

Hi all,

Just need some reassurance on something....

My 19month dd has recently started rubbing herself against things, most commonly the buckle on her car seat, or the strap in her pushshair.

She rubs herself against it, getting very sweaty and heavy breathing.. which looks very dodgy!!

DH says its probably normal exploring for her age as boys start exploring too.

It can be embarassing when people pick her up and she then starts rubbing herself against their sides!

Please tell me this is usual and that it stops as I have tried telling her off but with no effect!!

Hi
I read in a book somewhere that this is a form of child masturbation. Your Dh is right, its just a phase and should pass. It said not to scold the child as this would cause problems when they are older!
An embarrassing situation but should pass!!

my dd did this a bit,and although i know that it is perfectly understandable/normal..it did feel a little weird.

some children do it more than others.from your daughters perspective it is simply a very intense sensation, that she probably likes and is learning about.

try and ignore it,distract her etc. i wouldnt bother telling her off...cant imagine it working.

My friends DD did this, almost seemed to "zone out" as if having an orgasm?? (pretty sure that's impossible, but still, obv. pleasurable).

Mostly she did it when tired, to soothe herself to sleep. I saw her doing it in the buggy, car seat, high chair..
I think friend mainly used distraction or tried to ignore.

DD is at school now and I don't think she does it there.

samsonthecat · 24/03/2009 18:09

My DD2 does this she is 22 months. I have never met another child who does it so I am relieved to find it is normal.

purepurple · 24/03/2009 20:03

my DD did this for a while, froma boot 2 until she was at nursery school at nearly four
It does look weird and embarrassing!
Her older brother used to say "she's doing that thing again" bless him

she did it with her cuddly dog, she looked like she was humping him, and the arm of the sofa too

I was worried and spoke to the school doctor but they said it was normal and she would grow out of it

And, she did!

The thing is to ignore it or use distraction
I was worried that I would give her a complex by drawing attention to it.
I didn't want her to think it was wrong, her touching her body and getting pleasure. All sorts of hang-ups in that direction lies!!

liath · 24/03/2009 20:30

Dd was an enthusiastic humper - you name it, she humped it. I generally ignored it and I haven't noticed her do it for a while (she's just turned 4). Very normal albeit disconcerting behaviour.

SmallShips · 24/03/2009 20:45

My DD 14mo is currentely going through this stage, she does it for so long in her highchair she falls asleep.

She likes the sofa cushions too.

Looks very odd and my childless friends keep commenting on it. I just ignore it, she'll grow out of it.

babyboo1and2 · 24/03/2009 20:51

was going to ask same thing about my dd who is nearly 3 and a half and does this

she even refuses to get out of the car seat when we arrive at our destination saying "i'm not finished yet"

glad to hear other dd do the same

doesnt stop it being embarassing when friends/family are treated to it

weebump · 25/03/2009 00:19

Can I own up to doing this when I was younger? I must have been about 3 or 4 and remember my mum telling me to stop "holding" myself. It was as if I needed to go to the toilet, but felt quite interesting. Didn't even realise I was doing it most of the time. Deffo not sexual, though, just felt ... comforting

lisad123 · 25/03/2009 00:34

i didnt know kids did this, my dd2 is 18months and glad to know in warning. Sorry couldnt help giggling a little though as now have these images in my head of some little one clinging to someones leg like a dog does. gosh im so childish!

Claire2009 · 25/03/2009 00:36

DD done this, I just found it quite 'comforting' reading this thread actually!!

She done it from 13mths till 2yrs 7/8mths. More of a sitting down strange movement type thing, nothing worked trying to stop her ....just ignored it & it's stopped!

justme27 · 25/03/2009 09:00

Thanks all - definitely feel reassured - just wish there was a way to stop it - esp when other people in the car and walking past her in the buggy!

Just have to try and stop her progressing to cushions etc!

:-)

valleysprincess · 25/03/2009 15:48
