Drinks - am I worrying unecessarily??

My son is 13.5 months and has three meals a day plus snacks and also has 2/3 bottles as well (one when he wakes, one or two during the day and one at bed time). Someone commented on Saturday 'OMG, is he still having milk?'. I was quite put out by that as I don't see the problem - he's on Aptamil toddler milk and loves it. Should I be worried?

Also, he's still not able to drink from a cup - whether it's a non-spill or free flow or whatever (we've got several to choose from). However if you hold an open cup up to his mouth, he'll drink. Also, he drinks out of his stacking cups in the bath . Will he just do it when he's good and ready??

DD was on about the same amount of milk at that age, as well as a decent amount of food. She had normal cows milk though, I don't think it is necessary to drink anything else but that is personal choice. She also drinks milk now as she is a milk fiend. Lots of people do that to us too 'omg still drinking milk at 2.8 ' I am not phased anymore as she is eating and growing perfectly fine. DD could drink from a cup at about that age, but a closed one, or open one with supervision. If he drinks from the bath cups, I would just continue to offer whenever you want him to drink water from a cup, but let him to it how he wants afterwards. He will do it eventually, as long as you keep encouraging.

Sounds like he is doing fine to me.

"... still drinking milk at 2.8 ..."... hmmm, DH is still drinking milk at 44! Should I be concerned?

pavlovthecat · 16/03/2009 09:13

rollmops - quite! Some kids drink tons of it, some don't drink any after the age of 1. I think it so depends on the child (as well as the parent and attitude towards milk).

pavlovthecat · 16/03/2009 09:14

LOL, I just saw you said your DH at 44! Not your DS at 4.4 . I hope it is not from a bottle. Could seriously ruin his teeth...

DD1 5yrs still has 2 beakers a day of milk probaly each 5/6oz each. DD2 18mths has 1 5oz bottle milk a day.

dd1 takes after her dad as he still drinks loads of milk, dd2 takes after me i only drink milk in tea i even eat cereal dry.

My DD is 16 months old and she has one full bottle of cows milk in the evening and water during the day, as shes not a big lover of juice/squash. I dont give her milk during the day as I noticed she wouldnt eat much of her next meal after the milk, and also she put on loads of weight as a baby just by drinking aptamil, so dont want to give her milk is its not necessary.
All children are different, if your DS is having 3 meals plus snacks, and is still wanting the milk theres nothing wrong with that. He obviously still needs that bit more.
Also my DD drinks from a tommee tippee non spill beaker but I dont think she could drink from a cup like your DS. Maybe he doesnt need a beaker, have you tried the cups with the flip top and straw inside them?

AddictedtoCrunchies · 16/03/2009 10:38

No i haven't tried them - perhaps I should. I've got one of pretty much every type of cup!!

My DS is 2.6 and drinks milk more than anything else. He has some juice and water as well, but it hadn't even occurred to me to try to change this
Yet more proof I'm a crap mother!!!

My daughter is now 3.5 (OMG-where's all that time gone?!!) and she ONLY has milk on her cereal, she sometimes asks for it seperately as an extra drink, BUT only about 2/3 times a wk. Kids from 1+ are supposed to (yeah right!!) drink 1 pint full fat milk pr day-I sturggle to get 2 pints pr wk!I wouldn't worry too much. I had Niamh on water only until she was 18 mths old, then the "granny" syndrome (dentists words-not mine I hasten to add) set in-juice, both fresh and squash-I was fuming!! Took Niamh to the dentist 2 wks ago-she has the start of THREE cavities (she's only 3.5!) so, have to go back in 3 mths to see if they need filling (a child of her age should have 1 at the most)I was gutted, so I'd give a personal warning to parents who let their children drink juice-whether fresh or not. also dentist said that we're to brush within 20 mins of eating - whether snack/main meal & nothing to eat within 20 mins BEFORE bed time. (Sorry I'm off my soap box).

Rollmops · 17/03/2009 08:48

pavlovthecat , nope, he has graduated to using a glass:-)
My DTs at 15mo have their early morning milk, about 220ml, then 1/2 small beaker of milk for lunch, 1/2 for dinner and about 150ml before the bed. Apart from that they do drink a lot of water. Don't give them juice at all, they eat tons of fruit every day.
Kids are different and there is nothing wrong with milk unless the child has a lactose intolerance. Organic milk is preferable as it contains much more omega fatty acids.

nappyaddict · 17/03/2009 08:51

AtC - DS never liked sippy cups. He went straight from a bottle to a doidy. He used a doidy from about 4 months with help and gradually was able to do it for himself.

DS who is 3 in June still has 3 cups of milk a day (about 750ml in total) Milk is good for them I don't really see the problem.

Neither do I - thanks to everyone who replied.
