Obsession with naming things - 11.5mth old

hello everyone

Was just wondering if anyone else's baby does/did this.

Our baby is 11.5 mths old and has recently become completely obsessed with us telling him the names of everything. He can't talk yet (he kind of tries to) but he GRABS my/DH's finger (doesn't point himself so much, although he does that too, a bit) and points it at everything, asking what it is - at the pictures in his book, at all of the trees/shops/doors on the street as we walk along, etc etc. He's getting pretty good at knowing what everything is; when we ask him "Where's the cat?" "where's your head?" etc, he points to it immediately.

All well and good and we are, of course, bursting with pride at his amazingness (although it makes walking down the street a slow process) - but we did wonder...is this completely normal?

DD1 was exactly the same age when she used to do this. She would point at something and say 'ta?' - Meaning 'What's that called?'. I used to tell her the names of everything, over and over again. It drove me absolutely potty.

She didn't really speak until she was 20 months old though (although she understood everything perfectly well) and when she did, it was a full sentence, 'Can I have a cup of tea please Mummy?'

haha! that is very funny! yes, he says "da!" as well (meaning "that" I guess?) Can imagine him biding his time and coming out with something like that..."ass the mustard please, Mother"....
How long did your DD make you tell her the names of everything for? Er, is it basically forever now, until he learns to say "why?"?

Yep, lots of "s'ah" / what's that and finger pointing at about 12 months. Then came weeks of head shaking, as if she disagreed with everything we told her .

My DD is 16 months old and "whas that" is her favourite phrase. Every morning we have to go through the same thing, I have to tell her its her chair, her breakfast, her cup etc. On and on. Think its adorable though! (have noticed today that when she does something, like put her bowl or cup on the draining board, or something in the bin, she keeps saying "there go".) Sooo cute. At least to me!

hehe, it IS cute, though, isn't it? meant "pass the mustard" before btw. Not "arse the mustard".

I can't remember how long she did it for . But it seemed like a long time, at the time
