How old is too old for going in the pushchair?

Dd2 will be 3 on sunday, when we go out i tend to put her in the pushchair still as i find it hard to keep an eye on both dd's on my own, if dh is with me and we are not walking too far i will let her walk. Dd is capable of walking but tends to fall over a lot as her feet turn inwards slightly. Both my dd's have ASD and tend to drift off. Am i being lazy making dd2 go in the pushchair? People seem to give me odd looks as dd looks older than she is .

Do what's right 4 you.

I worry about this too as DS is only 2.2 yrs but looks older (he's a big lad) and has no sense. I find it easier to have him in the pram (for the shops etc) but often feel bad when he is going nuts to get out. DD was in the pram 'til 3 I think.

Ohforfoxsake · 13/03/2009 14:53

No, you aren't being lazy. Its perfectly OK for you to keep using the pushchair as long as you want.

Please don't worry about what other people think. They won't be there to pick her up, listen to the tantrum of the tired child, or fetch her as she legs it down the road.

My DD is 4 and I still use the pushchair. She can walk when she wants, or ride in the buggy. I really don't care, she's happy.

My two mantras of raising toddlers and small children:
If it ain't broken, don't fix it.
And this too will pass.

My DD will be 3 in May and stills goes in the double with her baby brother regulary, when it's windy or raining heavily, when I am out for most of the day or when I feel it's safer for her to be straped in.

I will not be selling the double for a while because if she doesn't need it I will use her sit for shopping, all the stuff we need for days out etc!!

totalmisfit · 13/03/2009 15:10

my dd also turns 3 this weekend and still goes in the buggy when we walk into town mostly (it's a 2 mile walk each way along dangerous country roads with little to no pavement).

as long as both are getting lots of running around/walking time the rest of the time it doesn't matter. how many (much older) kids do you see being driven door to door everywhere they go? and no-one ever dares to comment on those parents, not ime.

Thank you, she managed to walk up to school today to get dd1 but i took the pushchair with me to walk her back in, i think i will continue to use it for shopping, school runs and days out, i would rather she was safe in the pushchair rather than her getting run over or legging it.

My DD is almost 4, and has started school. I always take her pushchair on the 10 minute walk to school and back. Sometimes she walks, but more often she sits in the pushchair. It's a long day for her, and I don't see the problem in letting her rest her legs while she can.

Miggsie · 14/03/2009 18:00

I gave up the pram when DD was 2...she is now 5 and can walk a long way, not surprising really.

I got sick of hauling the damn pram everywhere, especially buses...

Also DD has SO MUCH energy that running to and from school helps wind her down a bit.

Really depends what suits your life but don't under estimate how much walking/running a small child can do given the chance.

mazzystartled · 14/03/2009 18:05

ds (strapping 4.5)will still have a go in the pushchair if he can persuade me to let him. more often than not i am pushing it around empty )or containing a small dolly as dd at just two would always rather walk.

RockinSockBunnies · 14/03/2009 18:08

I think we got rid of the pushchair by the time DD was four. We rarely used it from three onwards.

Going against the grain, there's no way I'd be taking my child to school in a pushchair. By that age (with some exceptions obviously if the have special needs) surely they are perfectly capable of walking and isn't the exercise beneficial?

snuffyp · 14/03/2009 18:11

My dd is 4 she has,nt been in hers since she was 3 but this is a child who can walk around eurodisney all day!!!

conniedescending · 14/03/2009 18:21

I've always used mine sporadically from 3. DD is 2.5 and its 50/50 whether she goes in or not depending on what I'm doing/mood etc.

I would say its ok at 3-4 but come 4 the child really should be walking everywhere. Must admit I don't like to see 4-5 year old kids being pushed about in buggys

xap · 14/03/2009 18:25

rarely used from 2 onwards. Now DS1 is 3.5 and will happily walk around town or wherever. I can't imagine putting him in a buggy - it'd seem wrong. I'm a bit at 3yos in buggies, unless there's some good reason.

Lulumama · 14/03/2009 18:27

DD is still in hers for the school run as she often drops off for a half hour power nap, or she is tired and whingy, and carrying her or walking veeeeerrrryyy slowly is just too much

she is 3.8

luckily, i don;t really care if other parents think it is weird/odd etc

for her and me , it is far better. come july she won;t be going in it as she will be starting school in september, but for now, it suits us just fine

littlelamb · 14/03/2009 18:30

I think it depends completely on your lifestyle tbh. We don't have a car and so walk everywhere, and dd was still in a pushchair at 3.5. SHe gave up about then as I really was conscious that ds was about to be born and I didn't want to have issues with her still wanting to be in the buggy. If you drive then it's probably different, if we hadn't had to get to where we were going in the first place it probably would have been a lot earlier.

LittleDorrit · 15/03/2009 22:11

I agree with Littlelamb on this - it really depends on your lifestyle. My dd is nearly 3 and I feel a bit strange about still using a pushchair - particularly that she is very tall and looks 4, and is in fact very athletic !!! But the fact is that we live in London, with no car, and do lots of walking, and if we are going to be out for a few hours (park, a bit of shopping, etc) then at some stage she will get tired and she is too heavy for me to pick up - I am small and she is big ! I am hoping to get rid of it by 3.5. And definitely by 4! But then again, who knows....
