Bruised cheek, swollen gums and fever - unrelated or not??

DD 2.2 went to an activity centre on Friday. Saturday morning she started coming down with a fever and by Saturday night is was 102.

She always seems to pick something up whenever she goes there....

She also has bruised her check and from the very brief glimse she allowed me, she might have bitten or hurt the inside part of her cheek towhich DH thinks was either from coming down the slide on her belly (unintentional) or being pushed over.

She also (!!) has red and swollen gums and will not eat - her mouth is causing her discomfort.

Are these all just a coincidence? We do get her to brush her teeth but it's certainly not what you'd call a thorough brushing AND she has a bottle of milk during the nights most nights (whole other story - night wakings and wouldn't got make to sleep without it - can't break habit as DD2 8 months old then wakes up and they keep each other up the whole night crying).

Are the gums from the night milk and not thorugh brushing or could they be related to the fever. The doctor says give her calpol which she just WILL NOT take - we held her down last night to try and get it in but she promptly sicked it back up again - v. traumatic for everyone.

What can I do?

Maybe you should take her to a dentist? Did the doctor look in her mouth? Could be an tooth decay, that can happen in children if they have weak teeth.

Does the calpol help?

belgo · 11/03/2009 19:22

sorry just read the part about her being sick with calpol.

Yes think I will try and get her to the dentist tomorrow - can they get tooth decay this early??? The reason I ask about it all being related is before friday her gums seemed fine and she didn't seem to have a problem with her mouth.

Could it be an absyss? Caused by a bump to the mouth? I would definitley take her to the dentist. What is her temp now?

Supercherry · 11/03/2009 19:36

If she is stillin pain tonight and won't sleep maybe you could go to an emergency dentist or even A&E. I realise this sounds a bit drastic but if she is in alot of pain. Is she drinking OK?

sunshine17 · 11/03/2009 19:40

Her temperature is raised but I don't know what it is exactly as the bloody digital ear thermomoter has packed up - not as hot as Saturday but hot. She is also very lethargic.

Unless she is in a really bad way during the night I'll probably try and get her in to the dentist tomorrow - our A&E is normally a 3-4hour wait and is an major ordeal in itself.

I have not idea how the dentist is going to coax her to open her mouth.........

I know what you mean about A&E Sunshine1, it is a nightmare. Good luck at the dentist tomorrow. Hope she feels better soon whatever it is.

sunshine17 · 11/03/2009 19:47

I've just been in to her she is red hot but complaining of being cold. I hate this when they are ill.

Yes I agree it's horrendous- you have my sympathies. This time tomorrow hopefully she wil be feeling better- it's probably some kind of infection, maybe an absyss, so hopefully they will give her some antibiotics. Just a thought- if her gums are hurting could you try some teething gel or powders?

sunshine17 · 11/03/2009 19:58

She won't let me anywhere near her mouth - I've tried everything. It doesn't necessary follow that this means something is wrong because she probably wouldn't let me near when she was well - ditto the medicine - she doesn't like being messed about with [hmmm].

Could an absyss bring on a fever like this then?

A sign of infection is a high temperature. An absyss is an infection in the gum so I would imagine it would bring on a fever. An ex of mine once had a bang to the face which caused an absyss- there was quite alot of visible swelling though. That's why I thought it might be linked in your case. I'm no expert though. Dentist will know tomorrow if he can get a look! Maybe the sticker bribe will work
