Better off with a trike. We had one with pedals down from the seat not in front so DCs could get the hang of pedalling and a long handle so we could push it without getting sore backs.

Othersideofthechannel · 11/03/2009 14:19

Unless she is very tall, you might have a job finding a bike the right size. DS got his when he was over 3 and it was the smallest in the shop.

mumof2rugrats · 11/03/2009 14:19

we have one thats got a harness and parent handle and i changes to a trike when they get bigger but he seems to think she would be able toi ride a big bike ..

Mothercare do a proper sit up bike with a handle at the back - it is what DS had at 2 and now he is a mean bike rider and scooter boy!

He wants a skateboard next which scares the hell out of me!

So no it is not too young if you have one with a handle at the back and front handles that you can lock.

Get a running bike like this one Our ds has had one since his 2nd birthday and loves it!

traceybath · 11/03/2009 14:22

ds1 had a likeabike at that stage and was pretty fast on it - he then had a proper bike when he turned 3 and was riding it without stabilisers very quickly.

That worked well for us.

ShauntheSheep · 11/03/2009 14:32

Running bike is good but dd ws too small at 2 for the one we bought (Mind you it was £10 in Lidls so am not complaining at all). We gave dd her runnign bike at 3 and she was on a real bike without stabilisers well before 4. Check out the sizes of them. we bought her one of those folding scooters at 2 which she loved.

Personally I think 2 is too small for a standard bike as they are also very heavy compared to the weight fo the child but one like MadameCastafiore had might be ok.

mumof2rugrats · 11/03/2009 14:36

iv just looked on mothercare and they have a couple of peppa pig bikes that look small enough for her as she isnt small and dainty she was a big girl to start with (at 10oz 6lb born) and all she has done since then is grow upwards ..

we bought a running bike for dd1 when she was about 2.5. she rode it all day for a day and hasn't touched it since. she's got a mini micro scooter now and just loves it, but she's 3.

imo, 2 is a bit young. i think a trike is a good option, although my dd1 didn't like it because her legs were too short to reach the pedals but too long to stay off the ground so she wore the toes off her shoes dragging them along the ground.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 11/03/2009 14:39

The running bike I linked to goes very small. DS1 is just under 50th percentile for height and it fitted him fine at 2

UniS · 11/03/2009 19:26

Islabikes Rothan has a very low saddle height for a balance bike. from 28cm inseam. Our boy had one for 2nd birthday, was riding it confidently by 2.3 now at 3 and nearly 100cm in height he is close to it top height and ready for a bike with pedals. At present he will bike 1.5 miles to toddlers and then home again after wards or will go round 2.5 mile off road loop in the woods like a proper little mountain biker. He has good leg muscles !

not a cheap option, but a proper scaled down bike and they have good resale value.

Habbibu · 11/03/2009 19:31

Second the Islabikes - if you factor in the resale value they end up costing £30-£40 - the initial outlay is still bruising!

UniS - dd still not v.confident at balancing by herself, though - did it just "click" for your DS?

Smee · 11/03/2009 20:16

Islabikes fab. If you can afford it that is.. Though they are such desirable things that you can sell and get a good chunk back when you've done

travellingwilbury · 11/03/2009 20:20

We bought ds a proper bike at two and by the time he was 3 1/2 he was riding withough stablisers. He is a scary skateboarding loon too though so beware

EdwardBear · 11/03/2009 20:22

DS1 just got his first bike at 3.5 and he has the smallest one available. He is very tall as well!
Can your DD do pedals properly yet? That doesnt usually click until about age 3 ime.

weepootle · 11/03/2009 20:24

Same story here, bought dd1 a likeabike for her 2nd birthday, she used it every day and when she was nearly 3.5 bought her a pedal islabike which she got on and rode straight away. Although she had also been pedalling her trike unaided before she was 2.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 11/03/2009 21:11

I'd go for a balance/running bike (dd has a puky that comes in various sizes)

or

a mini micro scooter

rempy · 11/03/2009 21:14

We have an isla bike rothan for DD who is really quite titchy for a 2 year old. The seat is as low as it will go and she is fine with it.

They do allegedly sell reconditioned ones, presumably in store only.

UniS · 13/03/2009 18:46

Habb - yes the balance thing just clicked one day, and he went from walking/running with it to riding it and freewheeling for 10 secs at a time. Now he rides it on all but teh steepest bits of down hill, for which he walks it.
He has been behind our bikes in his trailer since 6 months and pedaling a trike from about 18m - as soon as he could reach the pedals.
