stuttering in 3 year old

My DS (3) has very suddenly developed a stammer/stutter. Sometimes he really struggles to get a word out and gets upset about it. His language has devloped normally up to now, and this has come on very suddenly.

I hope it is just a short phase that will pass. I can't bear to see him struggling, although I obviously hide my anxiety.

Any advice/experience

My ds did this for a while .. I have always put it down to the fact that his mouth cant form the words as fast as his brain is coming up with them! I think it is fairly common.

Oh thanks! I am sure this is what it is as well. His language is taking leaps and bounds at the moment and I can see him really thinking about what he is saying before he says it, which probably causes him to stammer.

It is just the fact that it upsets/unsettles him that worries me.

Ds1 did this recently, hes nearly 4, and I phoned the health visitor to check, she said its v common, as bodiddly says , they cant keep up with their brain. A speech therapist friend of mine said it was called'normal non fluency' and just to ignore it, we did and now its more or less gone, unless he is v excited.

The health visitor said to come back in 6mths if it was still a problem, but so far so good. As you say, it seemed to be a phase and im sure your ds will find the same

DS had about 3 phases of this when he was 3, and during the last one it was quite upsetting because he would try so hard to get something out, then give up and slump and say "I can't talk properly mummy". But the phases didn't last more than a couple/few weeks each and we haven't had problems for a good while now. He is 4 now.
