My DS suffers ready badly from a number of symptoms every time he is teething,

His sleep is terrible (whereas he usually sleeps through the night)
when he wakes he screams and screams and it can take ages (+ calpol) to calm him down

he gets constipated for a couple of days and then has nasty liquidy very smelly nappies (sometimes for over a week)
when he wakes at night his stomach makes dreadful gurgley noises

he always gets a cold with dreadful snot which is usually clear and needs constant wiping.

when he was younger (6-9mths ish) he used to get horrible nappy rash, but not now (is 2 now)

I do know others who's babies get outbreaks of bad eczema but this is not something my DS suffers from normally

teething nappies - smell gross, odd greeny colour. Sniffles and nappy rash also common I think.

And forgot to mention the dribbling,
which can soak through 3 layers of clothing in minutes

but I am sure that they all suffer from increased dribbling

DS1 - eczema-type rash on side of face, dribbling (wore a bib for about a year), ear pain

DS2 - snotty all the time, horrible smelly nappies (related to swallowing a lot of snot, I think), lots of pain

The only advice I can give is Calpol and /or Nurofen. I did not find teething gels useful, because I think the teething hurts not just when the tooth is coming through the gums

KJTWINS · 10/03/2009 19:00

yes thats exactly the symptoms of mine can you give nurofen and calpol together and does it make any difference? how long does it all go on for it seems like weeks already and these are only the first ones.

Yes, I was told by my GP that you can double dose if the pain is bad i.e alternate calpol and nurofen (ring NHS direct and check though).

By the way, just keep an eye out for high temperature as well. DS1 did have a series of ear infections as a baby that I am pretty sure were related to teething.

The first ones are often the worst, maybe because it's an unfamiliar sensation, then it dies down a bit, then bad again for the molars (sorry, can't remember what age, mine are 5 and 8 now!). Children do seem to vary in how troublesome they find teething.

Good luck!

My DS is 25mths and still has 4 more to go (the last back set)

Nurofen brings down inflamation, but should not be given on an empty stomach so I tend to give this before he goes to bed so that his dinner is still filling him up, during the night I give Calpol

but then teething often makes him go off his food if it is really bad and then I don't feel I can give nurofen if he has refused his dinner.

screamingabdab · 10/03/2009 19:16

Sorry, just read this back and it sounds horribly discouraging, it's really not that bad after the first ones.

When they got older, it became a standing joke with my best friend to put everything (bad moods, tantrums, poor sleep) down to "teething". We kept on this way until we realised they didn't have any more teeth to come !

KJTWINS · 10/03/2009 19:30

thanks all for encouraging messages guess at least i know what to do and what the symtoms are its really hard with your first and i am totally neurotic too which does not help maybe i dont need to go the the doctor for the third time about the ezema or maybe i will.......

apart from all the things listed before, DS1 gets a rash similar to a heat rash on his torso about 12hrs before he cuts a tooth. Initially i panicked but we are now on tooth number 17 and he has had it with every single one. once the tooth breaks the skin the rash vanishes as quickly as it appears. bizarre.
