When do "happy pukers" grow out of it?

DS is six mo and since he was 3 wo has been a "happy puker". I've got used to it and into quite a routine - sit up after feed, wrap him in muslin cape, listen for burp and about 5 seconds later - hurl! This way I have thus far kept our laundry pile reasonable. However recently two things have changed - he has started solids and learned to flip onto his stomach, which he loves. The sick is therefore now flavoured and he is sick more because of being on his tummy (sick on his playmat, the carpet, his sheets, me...)

Presumably they grow out of it but when? Am sitting with DS on knee trying not to smell the cheesy sick we are both covered in...

uh.... yuck

poor you. I would suggest talking to your HV or GP, is this really "normal"?

arthymum · 10/03/2009 17:13

It's never been a problem (other than it's a bit revolting!) HVs and GP have always said he's a bit refluxy or eats (BF) too much and gets rid of the excess. His weight gain and development are fine. To clarify - it's only the milk feeds/if he has water that tend to result in sick, not his solid feeds, which tend to stay down (but do "flavour" later efforts ).

Dunno if it is "normal" or not, but just so you know you're not on your own, my ds was a happy puker till he was about 10 months [yuck]. It seemed to improve once he was crawling properly on all fours (rather than commando crawling on his tummy which he did to start with). I can't actually remember if I ever asked the HV - but I think I did and she wasn't at all bothered as his weight was fine. I think just some babies are sicky, some aren't.

He'll grow out of it, just keep a ready supply of bibs!

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 10/03/2009 17:17

My friend's son, for whom I used to CM, was a very happy puker till about 1 year old. It got better once he was on his feet rather than crawling.

Hiya. This sounds exactly like my ds1. e started being sick after every feed when he was about 6 weeks old. I took him to gp who told me it was a viral infection and would pass in a few days, this was on a monday, by friday he was still being sick so took him back and was told the same thing (I remember the days because this particular doc only did 2 surgeries and it was always him we saw). I then took ds back to doc twice a week for 3 weeks until gp referred me to a paed at the hospital. I think gp was just thinking I was being a first time mum and didn't know what I was on about. The paed agreed with me that it was probably reflux because although posseting is normal, it is not normal to bring up any amount after every feed. Ds1 was sick well into the weaning, I can't actually remember when he stopped being sick, it was a gradual thing I think. All I can say is if your dc has never seemed to be in any pain from it, you are both very lucky1
I am not medically trained, this is just what happened with us, but think maybe you should get it checked just to make sure everything is as it should be..

procrastinatingparent · 10/03/2009 17:24

All four of mine slowed down with the puking at about 6 months. They threw up very happily at every feed - my theory was that they were such pigs that their stomach just wouldn't hold it all.

sagacious · 10/03/2009 17:24

ds was very similar I spent the 1st 6 months wrapped in muslins
He was about 10 months irrc when it totally stopped and it was a gradual thing

He's 7 now and stormingly healthy

likessleep · 10/03/2009 19:09

9 months old for us

boisterousboys · 10/03/2009 20:18

My ds2 was a very sicky baby. He would even be sick an hr after his feed. Not much better when started solids but weight gain was fine, hv not concerned. He continued to be sicky even when he started crawling which as you can imagine was not pleasant, left little sick patches everywhere! Gradually settled down on its own when he was about 15mths (but he wasn't walking till 18mths, don't know if walking makes a difference.) Just take plenty of clean clothes around with you, for you and him! You won't smell of sick forever. :-)

acebaby · 10/03/2009 20:18

8/9 months for us (with both). But be warned- any cold/virus and it all starts again for a few days. After two pukers, I gave up and match our outfits to our food in an attempt to cut down on laundry

bodiddly · 10/03/2009 20:24

ds was a really pukey baby but largely grew out of it by 10-12 months. The more he got used to solids and his floppy larynx righted itself the less he used to puke!

sircoughalot · 10/03/2009 20:25

12 months for us, although at 18 months we still have the odd puke (yuk - particularly worse when dd decides to "help" us clean it us)

dd has never eaten much, so for her its not an issue of eating too much..

We have seen a paediatrician as she was dropping off the centiles. Unfortunately by the time we got to see him dd was 11 months old, walking and starting to talk. Paed just said "look at her, she doesn't look ill"

however, she is now back up the centiles and doing great

With ds2 it reduced VERY gradually from about 6 months, but at 1yr he was still being sick once every couple of days. But now (14mo) it happens only maybe every couple of weeks - when he's just drunk lots of liquid and you accidentally squeeze his tummy at the wrong time.

Docs / HVs never concerned about it & neither was I, seeing as it didn't bother him and his weight was fine.

CMOTDibbler · 10/03/2009 20:56

7 months for DS (a complete bf monster) and 1 year for friends DD (who was just a bit of a chucker).

Both had good weights, and are very rarely sick now

PuppyMonkey · 10/03/2009 20:59

DD2 had it and then she hit six months and it stopped. Actually overnight.

Bainmarie · 10/03/2009 21:25

8 months for us.

MyEye · 10/03/2009 21:29

9 mths, when she could sit up by herself.

I thought it would all stop when she started solids but it just meant we had green and orange sick instead of white/yellow.

Rollmops · 11/03/2009 12:45

DT2 was one happy little 'puker'
Grew out of it around 6 months, suppose starting on solids did the trick.

giantkatestacks · 11/03/2009 12:47

Probaly about 4-5 months was when it started to slow and then disappeared completely on weaning at 6 months.
