What do you do when your 15 month wants to be out the back all the time?

DD wants to be out the back all the time, but I cant leave the door open its too cold and we are letting all the heat out.

I also cant watch her all the time as I need to get on with the washing, hoovering etc.

But she keeps pointing to the back door and the french doors and crying/screaming/shouting.

Any ideas?

distract her

settle her with a baby walker ,some toys, books, let her help with your activities, give her a duster to hold or help you stuff washing in teh machine.

Second Lulu's suggestions. ALso have a set time that you do go out, say 1/2 an hour every morning and afternoon you are home, and then she will get used to that being her daily allowance and won't fuss so much in between (though this will take a while to settle in).

Also I'm sorry to say this but get used to tuning out the shouting If your DD is anything like my DS this will simply be the first of a whole series of, ahem, "discussions", about where she wants to spend her time, TV, bedtimes, eating habits etc etc.

What does she want to do out there?

Can you see the back from where you are doing your chores? Could you settle her on a quilt with some toys or something, or does she want to rampage around chewing the plants?

She wants to walk and explore I think. She does sit but anywhere where she stumbles, sometimes she tries to crawl out there. I can see her but not sure if that is enough?

I have the same thing with my dd, 14 months. I do what TheYoungVisitor suggested, make sure I take her out there daily. Are there any real dangers out there, and if so, are they removeable? If there aren't, then it seems the main worry is of her falling over without you there? If so, put a chunky hat on her and a coat with a hood, it works wonders in saving all sorts of lumps and bumps!
Maybe have some 'garden shoes and trousers' that you dont mind if she ruins?
A little car that she an get in and out of would keep her attention too, like the Little Tikes Crazy Coupe

CrackopentheBaileys · 09/03/2009 09:57

And you could always 'sweep' the area for stones, sticks etc before you let her out

Good idea about the coupe, I'll have a look for a reasoanably priced one.

I am also worried about her eating stones and choking, we have a little patch of gravel

Is it small enough to cover with something? Like a big blanket.... or is she too clever to fall for that?
If it's near a fence or something upright, you could get a bamboo screen and tie it around the area just when she's out there. Ihave this for our 'bike are' and it works really well. I just put hooks in the wall and tied some string to the bamboo.

CrackopentheBaileys · 09/03/2009 10:09

(check ebay for the coupe)

CrackopentheBaileys · 09/03/2009 10:11

haha just had a thought.... put some chunky mittens on her, then she wont be able to pick the stones up anyway.
She will look a bit like the michelin man......

feetheart · 09/03/2009 10:13

Where are you? If you are anywhere near S.Beds we have a (very, very faded) pink coupe car that DD and DS have grown out of. You are welcome to that.

HelpwithNameNeeded · 09/03/2009 11:03

unfortunately not feetheart, thank you for your generous offer. I have posted on my local freecycle group - fingers crossed.

I dont know how long the mittens will stay on for but I'll give them a try
