flipping baby

My 7 month old has just discovered how to flip over onto her stomach and also crawl (some weird variation of crawling). The problem is that she has been practicing flipping for the past 5 hours every 30mins (it's now 12.20am)-she wakes herself up when she's doing this and is rolling or crawling about the cot. I just walked in after hearing her cry and foung her sitting upright squashed in one corner of the cot.

My question is-assuming she's turning in the night onto her stomach (and probably sleeping that way)-should I be worried about cot death?

could you put a tolled towel down either side of her? am not sure about the safetly impications of that but it might stop her rolling?

TeenyTinyToria · 08/03/2009 00:27

If she's able to roll herself easily, then you shouldn't worry about her turning around in the night. My ds did the same thing at around the same age.

Just make sure there isn't a pillow in the cot, that she can't bury herself right under her bedclothes, and that there's nothing she can get her head stuck in or get tangled up with - I found that my ds has a very long reach!

Dizzy, she's so active that the towel wouldn't stop her-I actually think she's use it as leverage to pull up on the bars lol.

It's so weird as she went from barely rolling at all to suddenly rolling all over the place over the past 24hrs.

Toria-there's nothing in the cot she could get stuck in unless she decides to pull the undersheet off-which you never know!

lordy I don't know then - she sounds a similar age as my DD3 but we're not at that stage yet thank goodness

am sure she'll tire herself out soon, well I hope so!

valleysprincess · 08/03/2009 00:44

I just went in there and found her on all fours making some sort of growling noise. I'm not sure whether I should be posting on here or calling a priest lol

Sounds perfectly normal. Is she in a sleeping bag? No loose covers is a good idea.

My 1 year old makes lots of growly noises too. It sounded like the "Exorcist" in her room tonight!

Once they can turn over by themselves, it's ok to leave on their tummy if they are happy. Cot death people say it's best to put them down on their back, but leave if they flip over.

Mine always ended asleep on their chest with knees up and bum in air! v cute!

differentnameforthis · 08/03/2009 04:40

My dd has been sleeping on her tummy for around 6 weeks. She is almost 8 months.

She sleeps without blankets/sheets as she does not stay still. We place her feet to foot on her back, in minutes she is head to top (literally, touching the top bars) on her tummy, bum in the air!

I think you'd be safe to leave her be, as long as there are no loose covers, pillows or bumpers

She often sticks her bum in the air in her sleep...I was told with dd1 years ago that it isn't unusual for them to practice 'new things' in their sleep!

StealthPolarBear · 08/03/2009 06:52

if she that active (I assume she turns her head to the side when on her front?) then i wouldn't worry

warthog · 08/03/2009 06:56

put her in a grow bag?

fymmumoftwo · 08/03/2009 06:56

is she in a grobag - that does stop them moving a little but not rolling over....

the rolling is fine once they can roll baack again...

FatController · 08/03/2009 07:00

DS hated his grobag as soon as he started to move around so we had to put him in a big fluffy slerepsuit instead, even at 22 months he refuses to sleep with any type of cover on, what a strange child! He also does the on all 4s growling thing!
