Son has chicken pox and i'm pregnant

My 18 month old son has woken up this morning with spots on his back, which I think are chicken pox. I'm 15 weeks pregnant but have already had chicken pox when I was a child and shingles about 4 years ago. I'm just a bit worried about any danger to the baby - can I pass anything on the baby or is it ok as I am immune to it?

If you've had CP already then I believe it should be fine (I'm not a medical expert though!).

Just been looking all this up as my two have chicken pox and we have pregnant friends... apparently no risk to the baby or to you if you have already had chicken pox [http://www.womens-health.co.uk/chickpox.asp random googled link]].

Same info from NHS direct website

Thanks. He has got about 6 spots on his back, they look kind of like insect bites. is this how CP usually starts, so some reason i expected all the spots to come at the same time and that he would be totally covered in them.

Yes, that's exactly how it was on DD1 (though she had them mainly in her nappy area and on her chest. They looked like insect bites on the Sunday, but much more red by the next day. New spots kept arriving from Sunday to about Wednesday or Thursday then that was it (I think she had it quite mildly).

DD2 only just got spots (maybe) today so not sure how that's going to go.

Yes that sounds exactly like DS's so far - is there anything i can give him other than just putting calamine lotion on the spots? He seems a bit grumpy today!!

As he is over 1, we were recommended to get Piriton (anti-histamine) to help with the itching but only needed to use it twice (DD1 is 2).

Make sure you have calpol in as DD1 got a bit feverish on the second day of spots.

The pharmacist advised calamine cream rather than lotion, as it is easier to get on and keep on apparently. Also baths with bicarb of soda in them too for the itch.

Worth a trip to the pharmacist if you can, just see what they advise and make sure you have everything in stock as you are going to be stuck in for a while (am v bored with house arrest after 2 weeks!)

Thanks will pop up to the pharmacy this morning - I'm really not looking forward to being at home all week. DS is very active and will be bouncing off the walls before long!!

After 2 bad nights with fever, the good news was that DD1 was v tired and slept a lot (3 hrs int he day) which was a very welcome relief! Hope you find the same.
