Gassy baby - at the end of my tether!

My ds is just over 4 weeks now and is very gassy, and it just seems to be getting worse. During the day, he wakes up every 5 minutes when he is napping, scrunching up, crying, passing wind and seems so uncomfortable. He grunts and strains from about 3am every night also and we aren´t getting any sleep. I´m really frustrated and this all seems like a bit of an endurance test...
He is exclusively breastfed, and I am watching my diet. We have tried giving him an anti-flatulence infusion they prescribe here in Spain with chamomile and anis, but it has no effect.
We have tried different sleeping positions, swaddling etc etc but he just seems uncomfortable all the time.
I have a 2 year old son who had none of this and was as happy as larry as a baby!
Am in desperate need of some advice!
Thanks so much xx

Is he gulping down much air when he feeds? My DS is 4 weeks too and has had similar problems, I saw a breastfeeding counsellor and changed my latching on position and things seems much better. Does he make a clicking noise or lose suction?

my dd3 was like this it turned out to be acidic "silent" reflux however you do need to rule out swallowing too much air first. My dd just screamed all the time and only slept about 8 hours out of 24!

He does seem to be a pretty good feeder but does sometimes lose suction. What position do you change from and to?

IME I had to move him further down my body and make sure he was opening his mouth really wide. He was tending to have all nipple and not enough boob in his mouth.

I was also holding him too high up my chest. She said I had 'longer breasts, pointing forward'. I took that to mean saggy

I would say have an experiment and see if it helps.

Is there any breastfeeding support where you are?

Think I might not have a great position after reading your posts MS. DD somtimes makes clicking noises and I think she is getting mainly nipple but she has such a small large and I feel so big! My nipples look like tank starter buttons

Same here McDreamy! The breastfeeding counsellor told me they will only take what they can manage nipple wise but you need to give them the chance to take as much as possible IYSWIM.

DS was gulping so much air he was pulling away (ouch) and screaming and I had to wind him mid-feed but it seems to be getting better now although we're not managing it everytime. Feeding DD was never this tricky!
