Waterproof sheet in cot for young baby?

We are thinking of moving ds into his own cot soon so I have been setting everything up this morning.

He has a bit of reflux and is often sick in the night, so I bought a waterproof fitted sheet from Mothercare to go over the mattress so the sick wouldn't soak through.

However the sheet is REALLY rustley (is that how you spell it? Looks wrong!) and I'm sure it's going to wake him up when I put him in, and when he wiggles during the night.

I can't stand the thought of all the sick going straight through the mattress though, surely it will really smell after a week or so?

Any ideas?

Id be more worried about suffocation than noise.

Matresses for small babies are designed to let air flow through if baby rolls onto its face somehow.

If it rolled onto a plastic sheet it wouldn't ba able to breathe through it.

How old is DS? And how sicky? We used to just put a folded muslin under DS's head which worked fine when he was tiny and not wriggling around much or producing large amounts of sick!
I've just bought a fitted waterproof sheet from John Lewis that does not rustle but it does still have a plastic layer.

He's 12 weeks so we won't be moving him just yet but trying to be prepared

At the moment I use a folded muslin in his moses basket - perhaps that will work if I use a bigger one....

Good point about the suffocation - I think I'll take it off and save it for when we're toilet training!

We had a mattress protector on dd's cot from the point she went in it. I would actually be more worried about a muslin wrapping round his face than the protector restricting air flow !

The cot mattress we have just bought for dc2 has a zip off mattress protector on it so you can protect the mattress and then zip it off and wash it. Maybe yours has this too ?

No it didn't come with one, but perhaps I can buy one separately so I will look into that instead of the waterproof sheet. The mattress was from mothercare so will have a look - thank you.

Hippy chick do nice non rustley waterproof sheets. I have also used strips of sheet as a draw sheet at teh head end of teh cot/bed. smaller to wash than a full sheet when its covered in snot and dribble etc...

what about a waterproof bed mat? do good ones in boots- non rustley and nice and soft, no plasticy stuff exposed..... i wouldnt use for a young baby.... id use an old towel/ muslin squares instead. x
