distraught toddler because he has a cold?

Please help, I've run out of ideas! My ds is 17 months old and for the last 6 months he has had almost a constant cold - 3 weeks with a cold 1 week without (maybe 2 weeks without if we are lucky!) the problem is that he is a really bad patient. He crys/whinges constantly all day, he is better if I take him out but still whinges and I'm finding there is only so many times you can go out in one day! When he starts to cry he gets hysterical within minutes and there is nothing I can do to calm him down. I dont want to be unsympathetic because he must be feeling poorly but I never seem to see other children suffering this badly! I took him to the doctors twice but he has checked him over and there is no obvious problems.
Initially I thought it was his teeth but at the moment there are no new ones on the way so I cant think what is making him feel so awful. I'm exhausted trying to find new ways to entertain and distract him all day!

Any one else had these problems

there could be some teeth moving around under the gums i found the molar teeth caused agro way before there was any real sign of them coming through

just use some bonjela and see if this makes any difference my ds always seem to have a cold its normal im afraid if he likes water could you let him soak in bath and play could help clear his airwaves slightly

i would say more than likely the teeth try bonjela and see if he calms

Poor you (and him)
It sounds like teeth to me DS 2 suffered a lot (it isn't just when they are coming through the gum that they hurt).
He also had an almost constant runny nose with it (my GP said that many Drs don't think there's a link, but in his opinion their def. is). I aasume GP took his temperature, because both of mine had ear infections, again linked to teething at this age.

I have to say, I never found teething gels useful, and did used too give Calpol and/or Nurofen on the bad days.

OK, I spoke to NHS direct about DS a little while ago and they gave me a number of suggestions, including giving lots to drink and to offer warm drinks, warm water with a bit of juice, if he takes it lemon and honey in warm water, give multi-vitamins, and they had lots of tips I can't remmeber them all. Oh yes, leave a wet flannel on the radiator to have a bit of moisture in the air during his sleep, and add a few drops of Karvol to the flannel, put a couple of books at the top of the cot, under the mattress, to elevate the head and help decongest the nose, make sure the bedroom is well ventilated so open a window during the day...

I give calpol and ibuprophen whenever needed, especially at night time to help sleep better. It is hard, very hard on you and your ds

Yes Im having the same problem plus Ive just had a baby so I think he's trying to get all my attention.
DS has had a constant cold for the last 2 and a half months. The Doctor said she couldn't give him anything. I think he could do with some antibiotics but that wasn't suggested. He's completely run down. He's spends most of the day sucking his thumb which he was only doing just before bed when he was tired. He's grumpy and stroppy most of the day and refuses to feed himself or blow his own nose (I guess thats a bit to do with the new baby sister. Im pulling my hair out and just don't know what to do with him. DD is only 3months old so Ive got enough going on. I just want my beautiful boy back...HELP!!!!!!

mbennett, antibiotics will do nothing for the common cold. So you will be just medicating him for the sake of it.

Just folow the tips here, and I am sure once the warmer weather comes in he will improve.
