Bed wetting at 6yrs nearly 7

My DS has always wet the bed at night time. In fact he's not 100% dry during the day. I took him to the Doctors and he has been prescribed Imipramine tablets.

Has anyone had this described for their child? It's usually prescribed for depression but my dr said that one of it's side effects is to surpress wee at night.

I don't particulary want me 6.5 year old on anti-depressants!!!! even if it does surpress wee at night time.

Have you been in touch with the school nurse? They are fantastic at helping parents with this. You can get in touch with them through the school, you don't have to say why you need them to the school, it's all confidential.
Did the GP not refer him to the continence nurse? They can do some tests to work out if his bladder isn't strong enough.

My DS is the same age also wet at night.

I have tried not to worry as most things he has been 'behind' on he has 'got' eventually.

However, I have now recently considered now taking him to docs but also didnt like the idea of medication.

Am now considering buying a bed wetting alarm to wake him up as he wets as his problem seems to be he is a deep sleeper. I dont know if anybody else has had any success with this???

My son is 6.5 and still wet at night. We are just now considering contacting the GP/school nurse as he wakes up soaked every morning even with a pull up on.

I would be reluctant for him to be medicated. My friends son had one of the sensor alarms but found it woke everyone in the house apart from him! I am sure this would happen with my son as well as he can sleep through the night even if completely drenched.

bedwetting isn't considered a "medical problem" until children are 7.....

The school nurses will help at any age (may depend on where you live though). Could you not wake him before you go to bed and take him to the loo? Give him his last drink before bed at 6pm?

My friend's daughter was at the same stage and she had some fantastic advice from her school nurse. It was all because she didn't drink enough during the day and so she needed to 'stretch' her daughter's bladder by drinking more (especially in first half of the day) in order for her to go through the night and stay dry. She was given a chart to fill out with stickers for every drink she finished and another sticker for each time she went to the loo and emptied her bladder. After the first couple of weeks (which initially was worse at night) she cracked it! And has continued to be dry for approx 2months now. Definitely worth speaking to school nurse in my opinion

Thanks for your replies. I'm going to pick him up from school so will check back later. T

The doctor I saw was at the Children's Hospital not my local GP.

Must admit, I'd be reluctant to give my child medication for it[sceptical]. Try seek out alternative first.

A lot of nearly six year olds still wet the bed. I'm surprised that your GP prescribed him thoae tablets. Doctors usuallywon't do anything until a chikd is 7.
Also being dry in the day is not connected to being dry at night.
I would just keep him in pull ups for a litle longer.

StarPlayer · 03/03/2009 12:33

Thanks for your replies everyone.

I'm not going to give him the tablets.

Hi my daughter is nearly 12 and is still bedwetting. She has been on desmopressin, tried the alarms, charts, drinking techniques etc and still nothing. Hope this helps.
