Can someone explain baby shoe sizing to me please?

My DD is 10 months and up till now all her socks/ shoes have been sized by age, but now we are moving into proper size territory and I can't find anywhere that explains it.

Basically it becomes like adult shoe-sizing whereby you have to really try them on your child and check the fit.

Your 1 year old may have long narrow feet and your friend's short wide feet for example. Although they are the same size they will require different size shoes.

Try to go to Clark's or some other store with trained shoe-fitters and have a fitting done if you can.

Ditto Bumble.

They need measuring in a shoe shop.

Is she walking or cruising yet? If not then she really doesn't need shoes at all.

SlightlyMadScotland · 01/03/2009 10:45

Actually I agree with that too.

None of mine owned a pair of shoes - not even decorative shoes - until they had been walking 2months or so. They rarely wore socks neither.

Thanks.

I was going to get her properly fitted shoes once she was ready to take a walk outside, I just wanted a bit of an idea to go in with so I wouldn't be totally confused having to get my head round a new system.

She isn't walking or cruising yet - just like to think ahead!

Bear in mind that when it comes to it, the major stores size slightly differently it would seem. I think it's their width measurements. If you are measured in Start Rite, don't buy Clarks shoes in the same size for example. DD was an H/I width in Start Rite, in Clarks, her toes wouldn't even go into the H width.

Thanks for that ShowOfHands.

Clarks allegedly size their shoes 1/2 size larger than startrite, so a startrite 4 will be a clarks 4 1/2 - not helpful when you buy shoes in the sale and keep them until you think they've grown into them to find they're too small.....
Most non-width fitted shoes are the equivalent of an E/F, so beware if your child has wide feet. Wellies should be OK as they tend to be wide anyway.

I agree get your LO measured properly.

We used InchBlue slippers for outside until she was a confident walker and it got too wet for the thin leather.

You don't have to buy walker, start-rite cruisers are very good for beginners. The shop we bought our first shoes from actually didn't even consider walkers as the first shoes, regardless that our DD was already walking very good. They are far too hard for their soft feet.
