Day three in the house.

Farts aplenty. Lots of running to the loo but then saying 'it's too prickly'

Have dosed him up on calpol, masssaged bum hole with vaseline and even used a tiny bit of Xyloproct ointment - he still refuses to budge...

3 days witholding after an illness that made her constipated and she tore. Lactulose sorted things.

I'd really try and nip this one in the bud. My pal had HUGE problems with her DD holding poo. It gets impacted and hard so they have problems passing it, so it hurts, so they holds it longer... you see how the cycle starts. The poo can even bypass this big poo and come out as diarrhea so you think they're not constipated at all!
When my DD was poorly at christmas she didn't drink enough and so had one huge, hard and difficult to pass poo. She then began on the cycle above. It was only because of my friend's experience that we managed to solve the problem.
I used lactulose for a few weeks twice a day (hidden in orange juice), tried to encourage her drink and kept a close eye on her diet. I think that helped a lot, but the biggest thing for her was having four sticker books that she could have after doing a poo.
Sorry to paint a grim picture but hope it gets sorted.

10 days was her record. It took several enemas and high doses of lactolose of 'free' her. She got into the cycle of not eating as she knew it produced poo and the poo hurt so she just stopped both.
We now give her apple juice in the day, lots of veg, wholemeal bread and a small dose of lactolose.

I'd give your son lots of his favourite júice for a few days to get him well hydrated and feed him lots of fruit. I hope he goes soon.

Ds has gone 4-5 days without going because of constipation.

Dd (3yrs) has had problems with not wanting to go. In the end, we had stories/sticker books on the loo and conversations about having to go so she did not get a sore tummy and trying to get her to relax. Also, lots of praise and hugs.

Then encouraged lots of water and fruit and veg.

We are veggies so he eats tons of veggies an usually is regular as clockwork. I do have to raise my voice at DP though who lets him eat all kinds of rubbish on his shift.

Just had an awful time on the loo before tho. I thought 'we'll just sit here till it comes out' - bribed, massaged, joked, argued - the whole gamut. Felt terrible, he felt terrible but perked up immediatley the moment he was off the loo.

My friends daughter has been very 'retentive' so I know how bad it can get. Never thought it would happen to us. Just goping to have to tell DP to stop with the jellies and bread and give lots of water and fresh vegs and fruit and soups.

Or maybe he gets to have a jelly after he has a poo.

Some mnetters have recommended these. Never tried them with my two though.

Hmm, that may be an option as I imagine this blockage just getting harder. off to boots in the mornig.

After all this anus massaging I dread to think what his input will be to the nursery discussion on Monday!

My DD (2.11) witholds and has done since potty training. 11 days is her record!

She has lactolose, but we have stopped this recently as it makes it so soft it is easier for her to hold in. Normally she goes about twice a week and mostly she will ask for a nappy.

It is very difficult to deal with when they get in the cycle of witholding.
I try not to make a big deal about it beacause the more i try to persuade her, the tighter she clenches! Its very hard as obviously it is a big deal and its very stressful.

Hope he goes soon.

kitkatqueen · 20/02/2009 22:21

Hiya dd1 would hold her poo for up to a week when she started potty training and she did get into the cycle above, but - she loves apricots so we gradually increased the amount that we gave her each day and she got over it naturally. good luck!

oh don't forget - bananas don't always help even tho they are a fruit and can actually cause constipation in young children. Was the problem I had with ds recently.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 22/02/2009 10:53

Any success Mitochondrialeve?

Hanifah · 01/03/2009 22:49

DS had constipation a lot from 1yr to about 18mths...3 days was probably the longest he held it in though...lactulose didnt help it made it worse...so bad the last time we had to use suppositries...gp kept talking about diet but I had tried everything with fruit n veg...problem went away when I cut down his 4 bottles of milk a day to 2! and changed him to brown bread...cereal bars seem to be good too!
