is playmobil folding doll's house a good bet for 2.5 year old? as 'present from new baby?'

Wanted to get DS a nice and absorbing present from the baby, due in 5 weeks time. Saw this and he has seen it at playgroup and really liked it, in fact fought with another child over it.

has anyone had this experience or has other suggestions? I wanted to get him something that requires a lot of concentration (he can concentrate on something for 30-40 mins)..

Just from personal experience, I would find that too advanced for a 2.5 year old. It is very exciting to look at as a novelty, which is why your ds may have liked it at playgroup.

I bought my boys (5 and 3) playmobile for xmas, and I spend all day just picking up the tiny pieces and getting annoyed, because they've only played with it for 5 minutes

cheesesarnie · 19/02/2009 12:55

id go for something smaller and with less little bits to tidy up/stand on.

islandofsodor · 19/02/2009 12:56

2.5 would have been too young.

We bought ds his first plaympbile set at 4 and that was about right. The Fisher Prive Little People House is great though. Dd and ds loved it.

stealthsquiggle · 19/02/2009 12:56

My DS had playmobil from 2 and loved it.

I did (and would) remove the tiniest of tiny pieces until he was ~3 but personally I think it would be ideal - portable and will keep him busy and gives something for visiting friends and relations to engage in with him instead of just coo-ing over new LO.

My daughter got that house for her second birthday and loves it (she is 2.5). She plays with it constantly. It does help, though, that she is not the sort to put small bits in her mouth. I have to hide the whole caboodle when other kids come round as they constantly want to eat bits of it.

bigdonna · 19/02/2009 12:58

my dd has been playing with playmobile since2 and she still plays with it, she nearly 10.

OrmIrian · 19/02/2009 12:58

Playmobil is always a good bet. never really bothered with it until DS#2 came along but it's fantastic stuff. All the DC play with it (eldest only when no-one's looking).

Gemzooks · 19/02/2009 13:02

thanks all. He already has playmobil vet set and family, plays with them, if he's set up with a scenario like putting them in cars and taking them to hospital for example, he will happily play on his own for at least 30 mins.. The small pieces do drive me crazy, that's the only thing.. and SO painful when you tread on them!

That house has the huge advantage that you can chuck all the bits back in and close it up easily (we don't have that one, but DS has Santa's house which is more or less the same, and it's great for taking with us if we are going somewhere where there won't be toys IYSWIM)

Baby brother got Dd this www.elc.co.uk/toy/happyland-rose-cottage-1/

it's very well designed. Full of cleverly ingegrated sounds (doorbell, tv etc ) - nice and chunky - very intuitive.

I agree with those who have said its a bit too young. My 3 and 4.5 year olds do love their playmobil, but it is quite labour intensive for me, as I need to put the doors back onto cupboards, but the backpack on the dolls back, put the kettle in the lady's hand...it is just quite fiddly with all those little bits - not what you need when you have a newborn.

Aefondkiss · 19/02/2009 13:29

I got this for my niece for Christmas, she is 3 now, a friend got it for her dd's 2nd birthday - it is good and I think playmobil is good for children from your ds's age upwards.

I do think the really wee bits are annoying and destined for the hoover

georgiemum · 19/02/2009 13:32

Probably nice but are there lots of little teeny weeny accesories that will get lost/sucked up the hoover?

I do love Playmobile though!

SoMuchToBits · 19/02/2009 13:39

If he already likes and plays with Playmobil, then you can't go wrong. But I would say that as ds and I are both Playmobil addicts!

TheRedSalamander · 20/02/2009 08:49

Bit off topic I know but Father Christmas left ds this toolbox thing for all his small playmobil bits and pieces. Works brilliantly, even if I do say so myself! Also fulfills my need to keep everything in sets as I can put all the pirate accessories in one compartment/ knights in another/ family in another etc. Control freak? Yup don't even get me started on how upset I feel if I lose control of his sock drawer

nct73 · 26/02/2009 11:57

Would agree with going for Little People or the ELC ones. Between DD & friends there is at least one ELC farm, LP zoo, LP ark, ELC rocket & ELC rose cottage & caravan. All of them are a big hit with both the boys & girls. They are chunky & robust (tho cottage & rocket doors seem to fall off a lot but easy to pop back on) and great for imaginative play. DD is obsessed with her cottage & caravan set and spends hours acting out little stories with them.

screamingabdab · 26/02/2009 12:48

I would say Playmobil is too advanced, as it needs a lot of building from you.

I would look at Duplo. The Zoo sets are really good

screamingabdab · 26/02/2009 13:00

... and there are lots of other sets (Thomas, pirtates, farm, building site)

sb6699 · 26/02/2009 13:13

DD2 (2) loves her happyland rose cottage and caravan set too. There's not as many "bits" so its easier for her to play with without my intervention.

Playmobil is more dd1's thing (she's 4).
