Should dd no longer be drinking out of a bottle?

She is 15 months and has one bottle of milk in the mornings, this is the only milk she drinks as she wont drink milk from a cup.

She drinks water from a free flow tommee tippee cup but spits out milk when I put it in the same cup.

Should I maybe try giving her milk in a doidy cup, or leave her with the bottle, what should I be doing?

I wouldn't worry, I think that one bottle a day is fine,
My DS had one bottle in the morning until he turned two,

then I got him a Tommee Tippee Easiflow cup (the ones with the soft spout as he seemed to accept milk in one of these,
it also had a picture of Winnie the Pooh on it which he loves.

SweetCheeksLovesSweetTalk · 19/02/2009 11:54

Did you ever try a doidy cup ten10?

no never did use a Doidy cup,
(He is only just turned two)

during the day I use a mixture of
Tommee Tippee - First cup, Easiflow cup and the Easiflow Insulated cup with a straw spout.
as well as a standard open cup which he has used since about a year old, but with lots of supervision and only at mealtimes i.e. at the table.

If you want to get her to drink milk in her current cup you could try building up the milk in a cup by adding a small amount to her water and add a small amount more the next day etc so she never notices the transition

belgo · 19/02/2009 12:07

Don't worry about it. She's only 15 months, let her enjoy her bottle of milk.

SweetCheeksLovesSweetTalk · 19/02/2009 12:07

I'll try that, thanks ten10

Was wondering about this too - DS is 15 months and still has one bottle in the morning (won't take it from a cup either). Obv has his night time bottles as well (and occasionally his 5am bottle [blush)

Hmm...

SweetCheeksLovesSweetTalk · 19/02/2009 12:12

DD wont take a night time bottle anymore, so her morning bottle is the only time she drinks milk, I thought that by trying to get her to drink milk out of a cup she would hopefully drink more milk

think my dd only dropped her bottle and tolerated milk from a cup at 16/17mo. We had a few false starts and tears but we got there in the end. The breakthrough was my dh doing the milk feed in the morning and at night. He wasn't mummy so the change wasn't such an ordeal.

She did hardly drink any milk for about a week while we were doing this - but I made sure she got lots through yoghurt/cereal etc and lots of water!

Good luck!

HensMum · 19/02/2009 12:14

DS is 16 months and still has a bottle in the morning and one at night. He'll drink milk from a sippy cup at nursery apparently but not at home.
I'm not stressing the bottles, it's not like he wanders round all day drinking from it.

LittleOneMum · 19/02/2009 12:15

My DS is 17 months and he still has a bottle of milk last thing at night - and it's totally fine. I have banned the bottle for any other time of day, but it's so lovely and cuddly and such a special time still that I think it's OK for now...

Ellibop · 19/02/2009 16:35

I've just started thinking about this as DS will be 1 at the end of next month and I keep reading things about stopping bottles at 1 - but I have been wondering why! He still has 3 bottles of milk at the mo, but I imagine he'll drop his afternoon one soon. I've just started giving him a bit of milk out of a tommee tippee cup with his b.fast weetabix, at first he wouldn't have any but takes quite a bit now, but it would take ages to get a full bottles-worth down him I imagine. What is the reasoning behind stopping bottles at 1?

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/02/2009 18:17

im mean and always take away bottles at 1

i introduce a beaker 8/10mths and give afternoon milk in that and then throw away bottles/hide for next child

it is easier to get rid of bottle at 1, you may have a slight moan from child and maybe a day or 2 refusing milk, but if you start beaker before 1, i have never had any problems

if they are used to milk in a bottle, they will refuse milk in a beaker, but peservere with it if you want to get rid of bottles

only give milk in bottle, never juice as this rots their teeth

ShannaraTiger · 19/02/2009 18:20

DS is nearly 2.5 and still has a bottle of milk morning and night. My DD got bored with the bottle at about 3. More things to worry about as long as not having juice in them.

Lotster · 19/02/2009 18:28

Hello Sweet

My son has his bottle at night because it's the one feed where he insists on the comfort. In the morning he has cereal and milk which I get him to drink by putting a bendy straw in a plastic cup, he rejected a normal beaker for milk until then, although he has water out of them. So maybe try a straw, especially a fun looking one.

Also, your LO needs to be having a pint/20 fl oz of milk a day according to HV recommendations. Doesn't sound like one cup a a day is providing her with that unless she is having a lot of cheese/yog/cereal and milk etc to make it up.

Lotster · 19/02/2009 18:33

Oh p.s. my LO is 2.5!! I felt really naughty for him still having that bottle but HV said was fine as one a day won't cause problems and it's comforting at bed time...

SweetCheeksLovesSweetTalk · 19/02/2009 18:33

Shes has 9fl oz from her bottle, she has milk with her cereal and then one yogurt a day. I do my best to make sure she gets a lot of dairy (eg adding cheese to scrambled egg etc) but I cant get her to drink any more milk. She wont take a bottle at any other time of the day.

I'm going to have to preserve with a beaker or a straw.

I've been trying the TT soft spout cups as I want to get rid of the bottles. DD still has about 4 bottles a day and she very much uses them for comfort and does wander round swigging from them. She drinks water out of the easiflow cup and has done for months but screams blue murder when I try to give her milk in a cup.

Lotster · 19/02/2009 18:38

Well sounds like you get as much in her as poss.

I saw a beaker which might be interesting - it's for 3 year olds really but I bought it for my goddaughter who was a fussy drinker and she loved it.

When you sip, it makes a litle princess whizzes round which is quite fun. Here, at Amazon

justneedsomesleep · 19/02/2009 18:39

it's not like they'll still be having it when they are a teenager!

As many others have said, don't worry about it!
This vaguely crossed my mind the other month and I tried to give my ds (16 months) his milk in a cup and he wasn't happy - so i just thought, why stress? It will happen eventually - it did for his big sister who is now 3 and drinks perfectly fine from a cup. Can't remember when she gave up the bottle/how i did it, but since ds is likely to be my last, I kind of want to hang on to this little bit of 'baby'.

SweetCheeksLovesSweetTalk · 19/02/2009 18:52

Lotster - That cup looks fab! I'm going to order one and see how it goes.

I think shes ready to get rid of the bottle as when we come down in the mornings she points to the fruit bowl, so I think she would quite happily have food instead but I still think she needs to have the bottle until she drinks milk out of a cup.

Fingers crossed

Lotster · 19/02/2009 18:54

It's quite big, almost pint glass size but it is fun isn't it?!

Good luck.

sarahrhianna · 20/02/2009 16:34

my 23mth old still has 1 bottle of 9oz milk before bed and it is a comfort thing and something I am not going to stop until she decides.
For all of the 5 mins it takes her to drink it it is hardly going to do any harm, she does not use dummys and has perfectly straight teeth and excelllent speech. She uses toddler cups and even normal adult ones through out the day so am not worried at all about it.

MrsMattie · 20/02/2009 16:44

My DS had a bottle of milk in the morning and one before bed until he was 2.5 yrs old with no detrimental effect. I really cannot see the harm.

jojosmaman · 20/02/2009 16:48

Milk in a bottle at bed and in morning for ds (2), I can't see the harm, he lies with us in bed in the morn so wouldn't necessarily want him using a cup in my bed and at night its our cuddle time so ditto really, a cup just isn't cuddly!

Elizap · 20/02/2009 18:16

My DD is almost 20 months and she still has the morning and bedtime milk in a bottle. I cant see the harm in it and I love that special time just before bed with her. She drinks her milk while we have a story. I haven't even thought about when I'd stop with the bottles.
