My 12 mo ds seems quite aggressive. Is this normal?

My ds is nearly 13 months old. He has been a bit scratchy and slappy for the last few months, but he just seems to be getting worse.

Perhaps at first dh and I reacted wrongly (e.g. I found it quite funny when, after a morning feed in our bed, ds bashed his empty bottle over dh's sleeping head!) but for a while now we have only reacted by saying 'gentle' and stroking ds's cheek. However, he still seems to lash out, particularly at dh. He also throws himself backwards when in our arms and has been lucky not to seriously hurt himself.

From other posts I've read ds's behaviour is normal in other ways, like not laying still for a nappy change and getting a bit cross if he can't go in the kitchen cupboards, but is this aggression normal? I'm beginning to worry that he has a behavioural problem.

I'm not sure where he gets it from because we're not physical with each other, he doesn't watch telly etc.

Hopefully someone can reassure me....

My dd does all this stuff, and she's a happy little soul - they're just testing things out, gaining independence etc. It's not a behavioural problem AT ALL - sounds totally average to me.

Oh, thanks for the reassurance. Can I ask how you deal with it? Do you think our reaction is ok? Or should we just totally ignore it, move away, distract him?

I posted a similar thread about my 1 yr old the other day so I imagine it is normal. Tried ignoring, saying NO firmly etc, he still finds it funny to bite, pinch etc. I think the general consensus was that he would just grow out of it.
