Making the front of a Phil & Teds pushchair comfy for a baby too big for the lie flat section

I know your youngest child is supposed to go in the back seat of a Phil & Teds but I'm not the only mother I know who put their youngest in the front. I found my youngest didn't much like being down there near to the ground whereas my slightly older child thought it was quite fun. However, whilst I think the Phil & Teds is mostly a brilliant design, I think where it falls down is that a baby who (quickly) grows out of the lie flat section isn't particularly comfortable in the back seat or the front seat. I have baby number 3 due soon and wondered if anyone agrees, has anyone found a good product to add to the front of a Phil & Teds, to make it more comfortable and supportive for a young baby?

I agree with you Ody. My DS, 4 months, hates it! Both front and back seat but back seat worse. But he also hated the lie flat and cocoon too. I think the seats are a little too upright for teeny tinies to be honest. i've padded the back seat with a sheepskin and cosy toes but am just gritting teeth until he's a bit bigger!

SniffyHock · 14/02/2009 19:46

My DD was quite happy in the front seat from about 4/5 months. I used the cosytoes and I unzipped the sides (but didn't undo the straps) to make it recline slightly.

Thanks SydneyB and SniffyHock. Good to know it's not just me being fussy! My DD and DS were both happy in it once they got a bit bigger.

if you have a sport oi think baby is better in the back as you can recline the seat slightly, if not it prob makes little diff , i ued an outlook sheepskin liner, in this weather i would use a cosy toes and a sheepkin with the sheepkin inside cosytoes iyswim

i have buggysnuggles on my p and t as cosytoes and the do fit perhaps not as fitted as p and t own brand but do drape and are more snuggly

Quick highjack, I was thinking about putting baby in front but was worried about the heaviest child in front thing, i want baby in front because toddler sometimes walks and it gets a bit tippy with just baby in back - she weighs 19lbs. Does it work okay like this?
ps neither child has complained about being in either seat before,

jeanjeannie · 15/02/2009 11:54

Just a quick word of warning.....We put eldest in the back without thinking properly about the weight ratio.......and the buggy fell backwards - really, really scary and happened the moment DD1 (2.2yrs) squirmed to get out. DD1 smacked her head really badly on the metal bar at the back of the lower add-on seat.

TBH - I think whoever goes in the back is going to hate it! We really regret buying ours - I barely use it as the back passenger (big or small) is not happy!

whyme2 · 15/02/2009 11:57

Both of mine seem equally happy in the back or front, it just concerns me about the imbalance when I let DS age 2 out for a walk and keep dd age 6months in the back. It can very easily tip then?

cherrylips · 15/02/2009 12:25

I put youngest in the front!

jeanjeannie · 15/02/2009 12:27

Whyme - ours tipped over really fast! I looked at the P&T site and it does say that the heaviest 'load' goes at the front and we found a warning in with ours (scrappy bit of card) saying that it was dangerous to put big child in back.

bohemianbint · 15/02/2009 12:31

I'm finding this, there just doesn't seem to be a brilliant solution for pushing two children at once. P&T was great when DS2 was younger and slept a lot, more tricky now and I don't like him beign so low and having no view. Dunno what the answer is though!

cherrylips · 15/02/2009 12:33

It must depend on the age gap maybe, coz when ds1 was 2 he went in the front and my new born dd1 was lying in the back, then sitting in the back, but not for long.

When dd1 was 6 months she went in front, and ds1 in back. ds1 was a bit lazy and wouldn't walk far so the Phil and Teds was a godsend.

misdee · 15/02/2009 12:34

this is why i dont have a p+t this time round.

i have an abc everest with top toddler seat. dd3 is up top, and dd4 is in the main seat reclined back.

p+t wouldnt work for us as i want dd4 in the main seat and the back seat for dd3 to hop in and out of. dd4 prefers to be reclined, she doesnt like being laid back or bolt upright

whyme2 · 15/02/2009 12:35

Yes, I read that bit.It jsut means that Ds can't have a short walk whilst we're out because his little sister is in the back. If he gets out the pushchair loses it's stability IYSWIM.
I will do a test at home I think.

misdee · 15/02/2009 12:35

here

jeanjeannie · 15/02/2009 12:54

Misdee I'm really wish I'd gone for that - but I think I lost my brain when preggie with DD2 and went straight for P&T thinking it was the only option. Gggrrr!!

misdee · 15/02/2009 12:57

its excellant and is made by phil abnd teds original designers.

i am getting the reclining toddler seat for it soon,. aso dd4 can be up top facing me, and dd3 can be in the main buggy. just depending on where there want to be at thaqt moment in time. its very well balenced tnhat i can have each dd in whatever seat i want that day.

Nemoandthefishes · 15/02/2009 13:02

misdee is that hard to see around with dd3 sitting on top?

bohemianbint · 15/02/2009 13:13

misdee - that looks ace! My DS! is a wriggly maniac though, is it stable enough to withstand that?

Pannacotta · 15/02/2009 13:31

HOw about something like this to give more comfort/support?

misdee · 15/02/2009 13:55

no, its not hard to see around as dd3 head is just below my line of sight, nemo you are taller than me so would be fine. i'm 5ft 3, my 5ft friend though couldnt get on with it.

its very well balenced, but i have told dd3 not to rock in the seat, just in case, and obviouly dont leave her in the top seat unattended.

there isnt a uk stockist as far as i know, mine was from ebay, but abc website is www.abcbuggy.co.nz they do ship to the uk as well. have been emailing them about spare parts i would like .
