DS won't take his cycling helmet off!

DS (2.5) went out on the back of DP's bike yesterday and was so excited about wearing his cycling helmet he has refused to take it off since! He is currently wearing it while napping in his cot, with his head at a very strange angle - it can't be comfortable!

Last night we tried to take it off him to go to bed and this resulted in the tantrum to end all tantrums, and it took us two hours to calm him down!

We've just been to the park and the other parents must think I'm a really over protective mother who makes her son wear a helmet in case he falls off anything!

We've decided to just go with it and eventually he'll get bored of wearing it - how long do you think this will take? His head is very sweaty and no idea what we're going to do about bathtime tonight!!

Not long - DD decided that DH's chainsawing helmet was the best thing, one with ear protectors and visor, she wore it everywhere, including nursery where they were very good and just lifted up the visor to let her eat her breakfast adn in the bath. This lasted a day or 2.

LOL at chainsawing helmet! My DS seems to love dressing up - he also insists on wearing my pink fluffy scarf every time he goes out in the cold! Cycling helmet is still on, but I can tell its starting to annoy him now as he keeps trying to scratch his head but can't! At least it hides the fact that I really need to get his hair cut!

lol, I'd forgotten but my ds3 did the same thing when he was about 2. For about a week everywhere we went he had to put it on, the other parents looked at me weird! He didn't sleep in it though. I'm sorry for laughing but the image of your ds in his cot with a cycling helmet on!!

Make sure you take photos to embarrass him when he's older

Also LOVE the chainsaw helmet image, sounds like a great nursery

Haven't read the whole thread, but the OP made me LOL. My dd2 was just like that - had a cycle helmet fixation for weeks - and I too thought people would think I was trying to protect her whilst out in the pushchair!

She still loves to wear the most ridiculous of ensembles for days on end - usually of a very masculine kind - now I think people think I neglect her / have boy envy, especially because dd1 is always dressed in beautiful, co-ordinated girl's clothes!

Reassuring to hear the cycling helmet fixation is quite common amongst two year olds! DS is the opposite of your DD, Mooseheart, and likes to wear quite feminine things - I think he just likes to copy me, but can often be seen wearing my shoes, bracelets, scarves, etc around the house (along with the cycling helmet of course!)

iwouldgoouttonight - is your name taken from a Smith's song?

Because it's now in my head... "but I haven't go a stitch to we-ar"... ambles off nodding head...

iwouldgoouttonight · 16/02/2009 17:09

Yes it is. At the minute I would go out tonight but everything I could wear is covered in baby sick!

Weird, just reading this while Morrissey is on the one show!

Sorry but lol at the cycle helmet fixation. I'm sure it will pass soon, otherwise you'll need to forcibly remove and then hide it and ride out the tantrum (no pun intended..)

Do take some pics though, it will be something to laugh with him about when he's older!
