Sensory Issues

My son has been diagnosed with Aspergers and is Dyspraxic he makes inappropriate noises during carpet time in school and I have been told this is a sensory issue - has anyone else experienced this and what can we do to stop them, the Teachers have tried removing him from class (but that's what he wants) distracting him before the noises start, they have worked out the best place for him to sit but nothing works!

I'm afraid I can't really offer any useful advice, but my DS2 (who is in the process of being assessed for Aspergers) hums to himself constantly. The teachers have noticed this but it doesn't seem to affect the other pupils (annoys his older brother like mad though ). I had thought it was just one of his "things" so I'm interested to see what others have to say.

Is he really noise sensitive? My son is, unfortunately not his own noise, and I have recently learnt about sound sensitivity which maybe why he makes these noises. Because he can hear so many different sounds he becomes over loaded and will try and block out the noises he hears by making louder ones. An Asperger child compared it to be tuned into 40 diferent TV channels! I am desperate to help him stop before kids start picking on him for being 'odd'. He's recently been diagnosed and we have just come to terms with it and have found the whole process of waiting and not knowing a lot worse. I hope you are coping OK and at least our son can now get the right support.

Try posting this in special needs. Lots of people there who's kids have aspergers. My DD has sensory issues but not that one, I'm afraid!

Hi, did you start a new thread in special needs - just had a look but couldn't find it. Anyway, just wanted to add that, yes my DS is noise sensitive - although getting better. He loves music but absolutely hates things like the loo flushing, hand dryers in public loos etc. Although he hums to himself all the time and likes listening to music he hates it if we try to join in singing with him!

Yes just posted the message in special needs and my DS loves music to but listens to it very loudly! Which I have never understood! I have just read some information from NAS which explains noise sensitivity means their hearing is not very good and one ear is better than the other, the sounds are often distorted and they may tune into a conversation happening somewhere else rather than the one thay are having. My DS either loves ignoring me or genuinly can not hear me, I'm still working that one out.
