Has anybody else got a 'gaggy' child...?

DS1 gagged a lot when I weaning him, though in spite of this he has a pretty OK relationship with food. Going through a repetative stage at the mo, but still not too picky or fussy. However he's now 3 and a half and remains quite gaggy from time to time.

I can't work out if it's a problem with food textures that come and go (it's not always with the same foods, or even the same consistency of foods...tonight he gaged on a piece of green bean, fish pie and then the piece of bread I gave him after he refused his fish pie), a physical problem like having a funny feeling throat that he can't articulate or whether he's just playing me for a bit of a fool...! I have anyboday vomiting so I tend to react in a fairly anxious way, although I do try and curb this. He is, however rarely if ever sick because of it. He just randomly gags while eating.

Anyboday else experienced this??? I worry about him doing it at other people's houses and am worried he'll not get on with school dinners whe he starts in September. Is it something they usually out grow? and if so, when??!

Some people just have a more sensitive gag reflex than others.

My ds1 does this. He's 9. Chewing away, then for no reason - retches. I have just assumed it's one of his weird little 'things' (he has autism)

Does your son take bites that are too big? Try smaller mouthfuls and more chewing, see if that helps him.

I haven't got a child with this but I do have this problem myself. It's a lot better now though, it's only occasionally with very strange textures that I gag a bit. I have a very good relationship with food so I wouldn't worry too much. It will hopefully get better as he gets older. Just one thought, does he rush his food and forget to chew properly? My DSD gags a fair bit due to doing this.

Sounds like my DD2 when she was about the same age.

She had a bit of a refux problem when she was tiny (quite spectacular projectile vomiting!) and it seem to leave her with a bit of a weakness.

I clearly remember certain foods made her heave and then vomit (think it was the texture).

To this day she won't eat mashed potatoes or rice as they always made her gag and then throw up when she was little.
