my 3 week old son has bhad a bit of a cold for the last week, my midwife didn't seem too concerned as it hasn't stopped him feeding or gaining weight, even though i felt terrible about it!. i thougfht it was gone yesterday as no snot or sneezing but today hes woken up and seems to be having loads of trouble breathing through his nose bless him. i've fished out a couple of reaally yellow sticky bogeys but hasn't really helped.
he has managed a few feeds but it hasn't been easy as he can't latch on pr5operly or for very long... means he has been getting very frustrated. hes so calkm normally its horrible seeing him like that!
anyone got any suggestions as to how i may be able to help unblock him? wondered if sitting in a steamy bathroom might help?
btw he hasn't got a high temp or any other symptoms, just the nose...
feel rweally sorry for him poor little mite...

yes steam def help. saline nose drops you can buy over counter. you could perhaps buy a humiddifier

TrinityRhino · 11/02/2009 13:33

suck more snot out of him with your mouth

You could use the saline drops to loosen the snot and if you don't want to suck it out with your mouth you could buy a nasal aspirator from boots or somewhere and use that instead. I got a great one from boots and it has really helped my ds as he seems to have cold after cold.

I found these very helpful, have been using them since week 8 www.4little1.com/?gclid=CO-_hcD11JgCFQwDGgod-Wka0w#634X703

The aspirator is very easy to use and we use the room vapour every time DS has a blocked nose.

yep, i second TrinityRhino - just suck it out yourself - i did it all the time. those aspirators are horrible (would you likeit if someone stuck one up your nose!) and it really works. Sounds horrible, but to be honest - nothing that comes out of your own baby is horrible is it? Hope he can breathe properly, and feed well soon xx

Thanks for the advice everyone... he did improve a lot yesterday after doing a couple of massive sneezes which must have unblocked his nasal passages! made up for lost time then by feeding constantly all evening - not that i minded was just nice to see him feeling okay again!
he is snuffly again today but hasn't had a problem feeding this morning so unless it gets worse during the day i'll leave him. although might get some of those saline drops just in case.
I wouldn't have a problem sucking his nose! (strange how your own babies bogeys/snot in your mouth just doesn't matter isn';t it?)thing is, hes not exactly snotty, so not sure if it would work... will give it a go if necessary!
thanks again x
